On December 8, 2023, Jim Shields marked the conclusion of his 24-year tenure as a city councilor for Ward 4 in Medina, Ohio. As the council prepares to reconvene in January, Shields will assume the role of mayor, a position he has long aspired to. “Serving in this position for 24 years has been an honor and a privilege,” Shields stated during his final meeting. His sentiments reflect a deep commitment to the local community and governance.

A Legacy of Service

Shields expressed appreciation for his time on the council, emphasizing the collaborative spirit he fostered with his colleagues. “I never once regretted it and enjoyed every minute of it. I am grateful to my fellow council members. We don’t always agree, but we respect each other and listen and learn from one another,” he remarked. His recognition of differing opinions highlights the importance of dialogue in local governance.

He took a moment to acknowledge Council President John Coyne, stating, “I am a fan and admirer of your leadership and the job you have done as council president.” Shields also thanked the department heads for their problem-solving efforts, indicating his eagerness to work closely with them in his new role. “This wonderful group of people solve so many things, and I am looking forward to working with them and spending more time with them in this new capacity,” he added.

Colleagues Reflect on Shields’ Impact

During the meeting, members of the council and staff shared their gratitude for Shields’ service. “I appreciate Jim’s service and the years we have served together and I look forward to working with you in this new role,” Coyne responded. Nino Piccoli, the Service Director, echoed these sentiments, saying, “Jim, I’ve known you almost 25 years and I look forward to working with you. You have the best interest of the public always.”

Shields, a lifelong resident of Medina, has also served as the director of human resources and legal counsel for Medina City Schools. His extensive experience in public service and education positions him well for the responsibilities of mayor, where he will continue to advocate for the community he has long represented.

As Shields prepares for this new chapter, the residents of Medina can anticipate his continued dedication to their interests and the city’s development. His transition from councilor to mayor signifies a new opportunity to influence local governance positively and foster community engagement further.
