Gunner White Triumphs After Injury to Lead CNU to Playoffs
In a remarkable turnaround, Gunner White of Christopher Newport University (CNU) solidified his legacy by scoring his 50th touchdown, leading his team to a dramatic 45-42 victory over Salisbury and securing a spot in the NCAA playoffs. This milestone came just three days after White faced the possibility of an end to his football career due to an injury suffered during a previous game against Montclair State.
White’s 28-yard touchdown run, which occurred in the fourth quarter of the game on November 24, 2023, not only helped clinch the win but also stood out as his favorite among all his touchdowns. Reflecting on the moment, White stated, “It was by far my favorite touchdown in my life,” emphasizing how close he came to potentially ending his career.
Overcoming Adversity
The injury occurred on the first play of the third quarter against Montclair State. After running for 18 yards, White felt immediate pain in his toe, leading to fears of a fracture. “I had pretty much accepted that my career was over,” he revealed, noting discussions with family about transitioning to a coaching role for the remainder of the season.
Fortunately for White and the Captains, Robert Kearn, the head athletic trainer, ruled out a fracture after an X-ray. Later, an MRI revealed a torn tendon, allowing White to receive treatment that included a cortisone shot. He was determined to play in the crucial game against Salisbury, albeit with caution.
Initially, White participated minimally, appearing only on a screen pass in the first half. However, when freshman Drevyon Tharrington was injured, White stepped up when his team needed him most. As CNU held a narrow 38-36 lead late in the game, White rushed four times for a total of 44 yards, culminating in the decisive touchdown.
“He’s a tough, tough kid,” remarked Paul Crowley, CNU’s head coach, highlighting White’s resilience and determination. “We weren’t even sure he could play against Salisbury and he ends up scoring the winning touchdown. That’s a testament to his toughness.”
A Record-Breaking Season
With this victory, CNU finished the regular season undefeated with a record of 10-0, earning a first-round bye in the Division III playoffs. This marked the program’s best postseason position in its history, with White leading in multiple all-time categories, including touchdowns, points (302), and rushing yards (2,737).
“Anyone that says they don’t care about leaving an impact would be lying,” White expressed, reflecting on his contributions to the team. Despite this being statistically his least productive season in terms of yardage, it has become his favorite due to the camaraderie and success of his teammates.
As the Captains prepare for their playoff matchup against Susquehanna on December 2, 2023, they are eager to continue their historic run. The game will take place at TowneBank Stadium and will be broadcast on ESPN+ and 99.1 FM.
Looking ahead, CNU aims to build on its impressive season, with players like Connor Barry, the New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Year, leading the charge. The team is set to face a formidable opponent in Susquehanna, who will be seeking revenge after falling to CNU earlier in the season.
As the playoffs approach, the Captains are ready to prove their mettle and chase the championship, with White as a central figure in their quest for glory.
