Google Introduces Preferred Sources to Combat AI Misinformation
The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed the digital landscape, particularly in how information is accessed. In August 2025, Google launched a feature called Preferred Sources to help users navigate the complexities of AI-generated content. This tool allows users to select specific news outlets or websites to prioritize in search results, aiming to provide reliable information in an age where AI can produce misleading content.
In recent years, AI has increasingly been integrated into platforms like Google Search. Users now encounter an AI-generated overview at the top of their search results, intended to summarize information quickly. While this feature aims to enhance user experience, it has faced criticism for inaccuracies. Reports indicate that AI models, including Gemini, are prone to a phenomenon known as “hallucination,” where they generate incorrect information. This issue has raised serious concerns about the reliability of AI-generated news.
A joint study by the European Broadcasting Union and the BBC revealed that AI models often misrepresent news content, with an error rate as high as 45%. This has left many users skeptical about the accuracy of AI-driven information. An investigation conducted by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism across 47 countries found that a significant portion of the audience is uncomfortable with AI-generated news, especially on sensitive topics such as politics. Moreover, research from the Poynter Institute showed that nearly half of Americans prefer not to receive news from AI sources.
Despite these concerns, the adoption of AI as a news source is growing, particularly in large markets like India, where its use has doubled as of 2025, according to a study by Oxford University and the Reuters Institute. Some newsrooms are ethically integrating AI into their journalism practices, but transparency remains an issue, as many outlets do not disclose when AI is used to generate content.
To set up the Preferred Sources feature, users can enter a query into Google Search, scroll to the Top Stories section, and select the star icon next to the text. A pop-up will prompt users to enter their preferred news outlets. By doing so, Google will prioritize results from these selected sources for future searches. This approach empowers users to choose the news they trust, helping to avoid the pitfalls of AI-generated content.
As AI continues to influence digital tools, the responsibility lies with readers to seek out trustworthy sources. Google’s Preferred Sources feature provides a valuable option for users to enhance their search experience and mitigate misinformation. As the landscape of news consumption evolves, tools like this may play a crucial role in restoring faith in reliable journalism.
