Goldfinger Revamps Iconic ‘Superman’ with Tony Hawk and Bryce Vine
The pop-punk band Goldfinger has released a new version of their iconic song “Superman,” featuring unexpected contributions from skateboard legend Tony Hawk and alternative hip-hop artist Bryce Vine. This updated rendition blends rap and alternative rock, providing a modern twist to a beloved classic.
Hawk, who originally included “Superman” in the soundtrack for his video game Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, lends his vocals to the track, marking a unique collaboration. “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater was everything for us early-2000s kids,” Vine noted. “The soundtrack was like a secret mixtape that shaped a whole generation of musicians—I was one of them.” He recounted his excitement when he first heard the original song, describing it as a gateway into the worlds of ska and punk music.
Vine’s collaboration with Goldfinger frontman John Feldmann led to this fresh take on “Superman.” “Fast-forward years later, I’m in the studio with John asking if he’d want to produce a cover of his own track. He’s like, ‘Hell yeah. We should get Tony Hawk to feature.’ Wild how stuff comes full circle,” Vine added.
Hawk, now 57, is celebrated not only for his remarkable skateboarding career, which includes ten X Games gold medals, but also for his role as an entrepreneur and cultural icon. Known as Birdman, he has appeared in numerous films and television shows, further solidifying his status as one of the most influential figures in skateboarding history.
While Hawk has previously performed “Superman” live with Goldfinger, he is not primarily recognized as a singer. His only other musical release featuring his vocals is a two-song EP titled “In the City,” which he recorded with Punk Rock Karaoke in 2022. This collaboration with Bryce Vine marks a notable expansion of his musical endeavors.
Vine, 37, is known for his fusion of alternative hip-hop, rock, and R&B. His popular tracks, including “Drew Barrymore,” “La La Land,” and “Sour Patch Kids,” have garnered significant attention. He performed at the New York State Fair in 2022, further showcasing his appeal.
Goldfinger, formed in the 1990s, is renowned for hits like “Superman” and a cover of “99 Red Balloons,” both of which have exceeded 100 million streams on Spotify. Their music has been featured in several films, including “Eurotrip,” “Not Another Teen Movie,” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.”
“I can’t wait for everyone to hear our version of the Goldfinger song ‘Superman’ featuring Tony Hawk,” Feldmann said in a statement. “Gonna be rad!”
Fans can now listen to this exciting new version of “Superman” featuring Bryce Vine and Tony Hawk, alongside the original track that has left a lasting impact on both music and skate culture. The collaboration highlights the enduring legacy of a song that has influenced a generation.
