Dallas Faces Frigid Temperatures and Rain Before Warming Midweek

A cold front swept through the Dallas area on Thursday, bringing scattered rain and thunderstorms. Some locations received more than 1 inch of rainfall, while others experienced little precipitation. As a result, early Sunday temperatures in the region dropped below freezing, with Possum Kingdom Lake reporting a low of 29 degrees Fahrenheit and Dallas recording 34 degrees. The chill was exacerbated by strong winds, resulting in wind chills that pushed temperatures into the 20s, with some areas experiencing “feels like” readings in the upper teens.

Weather Impact and Future Forecasts

Cloud cover will linger throughout the day as the weather system moves eastward, leading to significant travel disruptions across the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast regions, where rain transitions to sleet and snow. The upper-level low pressure system over the Great Lakes is expected to continue producing snow in that area.

Looking ahead to Monday, North Texas is not anticipated to face major weather-related issues. Forecasts indicate that a southwest flow aloft will maintain cloud cover, potentially leading to isolated showers. Temperatures are expected to remain above freezing, which should prevent any wintry precipitation. The probability of rain is relatively low, estimated at 20 to 30 percent, and any rainfall that occurs will be scattered.

Gradual Warming Expected Midweek

Tuesday and Wednesday are projected to be calmer, with a gradual warming trend returning daytime highs to the 50s on Tuesday and approaching 60 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday. Another, more robust weather system is expected to arrive on Thursday, bringing a higher likelihood of widespread rain and thunderstorms. Following this system, conditions are predicted to dry out by Friday.

While temperatures are expected to fluctuate throughout the week, forecasters note that there will likely be more cold days than warm ones. The upcoming weekend, however, is anticipated to bring milder weather conditions, with temperatures returning to near-normal levels, providing relief to residents in the Dallas area.
