Community Remembers Charles William Ewart, 87, of Geneva

Charles William “Charlie” Ewart, aged 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Geneva, Indiana, on October 4, 2025. His family and friends remember him as a dedicated veteran, a loving husband, and a cherished member of the community.
Born on August 6, 1938, in Huntington, Indiana, Charlie was the son of Emmett E. Ewart and Marcille (Chase) Ewart-Ramsey, both of whom predeceased him. He married Veda Mae (Smith) Ewart on May 23, 1987, embarking on a journey filled with love and family.
Charlie graduated from Rock Creek High School in 1957 and spent much of his career contributing to local businesses. He held positions at Modern Mill and Kitco in Bluffton, Home Dairy in Berne, and EPC in Geneva. For three decades, he was closely associated with Downing & Glancy Funeral Home, where he became a familiar face, often seen socializing at the Downing & Glancy Coffee Club.
As a proud veteran of the United States Army, Charlie actively participated in community events, including the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., in 2022. He was a member of both the Geneva VFW and the American Legion, demonstrating his commitment to honoring fellow servicemen and women.
Charlie’s faith was important to him, and he attended Bluffton First Church of the Nazarene. His leisure activities included fishing, watching sports, and enjoying time on his pontoon boat. Yet, his greatest joy came from spending time with his family, which included his wife, Veda, and their children.
He is survived by his wife, Veda Ewart of Berne; sons, Kevin (Cathy) Ewart of Bluffton, Scott (Cammie) Ewart of Mooresville, Earl (Lynn) Ewart of Markleville, and Larry (Peg) Augsburger of Geneva; daughter, Anita (Shawn) Miller of Berne; and sister, Bonnie Blessing of Fort Wayne. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Charlie’s family grieves the loss of their beloved father and grandfather, who was also preceded in death by his daughter, Sandy Ewart, and brothers, Robert Ewart and Ronald Ramsey.
Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on October 10, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and again from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Downing & Glancy Funeral Home, located at 100 N. Washington Street, Geneva. A service celebrating Charlie’s life will take place on October 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Pastor Wilbur Taylor and Pastor Chris Kruchkow. Viewing will commence one hour prior to the service, followed by interment at West Lawn Cemetery in Geneva. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the U.S. Army Honor Guard, the Geneva VFW, and the Berne American Legion.
Memorial contributions may be made to Wycliffe Associates, an organization dedicated to accelerating Bible translation.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Downing & Glancy Funeral Home, serving the community with compassion and care. Charlie Ewart will be remembered fondly for his contributions to family, friends, and the greater Geneva community.
