Chicago Welcomes Fall-Like Weather After Scorching Summer Heat
Chicago is experiencing a significant drop in temperatures this week, offering residents a break from the intense heat and humidity that characterized the summer months. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected to reach only the low-to-mid 70s, with overnight lows potentially dipping below 50 degrees in some areas.
Unseasonably Cool Temperatures
This week’s forecast marks a stark contrast to the typical weather for late August. The high temperature of 72 degrees on Monday and Tuesday is approximately 10 degrees below the normal high for those dates, based on a 30-year average of daily climate data. Furthermore, overnight lows of 46 degrees are nearly 20 degrees cooler than the average for August 25 and 26, as confirmed by weather data.
The cooler weather follows a particularly warm summer, which saw Chicago record its fifth-warmest season in 154 years as of mid-July, according to meteorologist Bill Snyder from WGN. The lowest temperature recorded for August is 42 degrees, a record set on August 28, 1986, highlighting how unusual these current conditions are.
Forecast and Impacts
Temperatures are projected to rise slightly by mid-week, with a high of 78 degrees expected on Thursday, still below the normal temperature of 81 degrees. The forecast indicates a dry week ahead, which is a relief following several weeks of summer storms that resulted in flooding in certain areas, particularly on the Southwest Side of the city.
As Chicagoans prepare for this unexpected shift in weather, many are likely to welcome the chance to break out their sweaters and enjoy the milder conditions. The transition from summer to fall is not just a change in temperature but also a reminder of the city’s dynamic climate.
