A tragic incident on Chicago’s South Side resulted in the death of a 15-year-old boy and left another child critically injured on the afternoon of March 28, 2024. The shooting occurred around 15:45 in a vacant lot located in the 600-block of West 47th Street, near Tilden High School. According to the Chicago Police Department, the boys, aged 12 and 15, were involved in a confrontation with an unknown number of suspects when the violence escalated.

During the altercation, at least one suspect brandished a firearm and opened fire on the boys. The 12-year-old sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, while the 15-year-old was struck in the hip area. Following the shooting, one of the boys managed to flee to the rear of a nearby barbershop, where he ultimately collapsed. Both were transported to the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, where they were admitted in critical condition.

On the morning of March 29, 2024, authorities announced that the 15-year-old, identified as Alex Durante by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, succumbed to his injuries. The tragic event has raised concerns within the local community, particularly regarding youth safety in the area.

In connection with the shooting, police apprehended Daniel Navas Maiver, a 19-year-old, on March 29. He has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. Maiver is scheduled to appear in court on Sunday, March 31, 2024.

Authorities have not disclosed whether any of the individuals involved in the shooting are students at Tilden High School. The Chicago Police Department continues to investigate the incident, urging anyone with information to come forward as they seek to address the ongoing issue of gun violence affecting the community.

This incident underscores the urgent need for discussions and actions aimed at preventing violence among youth, as families and community leaders grapple with the implications of such tragedies.
