The Chehalis Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) plans to hold a meeting on November 10, 2023, at 18:30 to address the Chehalis School District’s decision to forgo participation in the Camp Cispus program this year. This longstanding outdoor educational initiative has been a staple for fifth-graders in the district for the past two years but has been sidelined due to financial concerns.

The PTO, representing students from James W. Lintott and Orin C. Smith Elementary Schools, expressed disappointment over the district’s tentative decision to skip Camp Cispus. This decision follows a unanimous vote by the PTO to support and potentially fund the outdoor experience for this year’s fifth graders. Many parents involved with the PTO have fond memories of attending Camp Cispus themselves, highlighting the program’s significance within the community.

In a statement released on November 6, the PTO emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “Your voice matters — and your involvement helps ensure parent perspectives are part of decision-making.” The meeting will take place at the library of James W. Lintott Elementary School and is open to all families and community members.

Both Superintendent Rick Goble and Assistant Superintendent Trisha Smith will attend the meeting to answer questions and explore alternative outdoor education opportunities for students. Their presence reflects the district’s commitment to engaging with parents and stakeholders regarding educational decisions.

In addition to the discussions about Camp Cispus, Cub Scout Pack 9301 will offer outdoor-themed activities for children in attendance. The PTO described this collaboration as a “perfect match” for the meeting, emphasizing themes of exploration, leadership, and learning in the outdoors.

This gathering represents a critical opportunity for parents and community members to voice their opinions and collaborate on potential solutions concerning outdoor education for the district’s students.
