Blue Jays’ Unheralded Stars Propel Team to World Series Glory
The Toronto Blue Jays have advanced to the World Series, fueled by a blend of established stars and under-the-radar players who have significantly contributed to the team’s success. This remarkable journey is underscored by the impactful leadership of hitting coach David Popkins, who has transformed the Blue Jays’ offense into one of the most formidable units in Major League Baseball.
In November 2021, Popkins took on the role of hitting coach with the Blue Jays after a brief, tumultuous tenure with the Minnesota Twins. Despite helping the Twins rank in the top half of MLB in runs scored during his three years there, he was dismissed after the 2024 season. His transition to the Blue Jays has proven to be a pivotal career move. Under his guidance, the team finished the regular season ranked fourth in the majors for runs scored, and they have displayed remarkable offensive prowess throughout the playoffs.
Popkins has emphasized a tailored approach to hitting, encouraging players to exploit their individual strengths while remaining unpredictable at the plate. The Blue Jays lead the league in contact rate and minimize strikeouts, showcasing their discipline and ability to frustrate opposing pitchers. “I just think our one through nine is tough to get through,” Popkins noted, highlighting a lineup that makes it difficult for pitchers to find weaknesses.
Key Contributors to Blue Jays’ Success
While stars like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer, and Bo Bichette attract attention, several less heralded players have played critical roles in the Blue Jays’ journey to the World Series.
Addison Barger, who debuted in the majors in April 2025, has emerged as a key player. The 25-year-old infielder has shown impressive performance, batting .243 with 21 home runs during the regular season. His postseason contributions have been even more significant, with a .300 batting average and three home runs. Barger’s pinch-hit grand slam in Game 1 of the World Series has made history as the first of its kind in World Series history, marking a memorable moment for the team.
Another pivotal figure is Ernie Clement, who has found a home with the Blue Jays after struggling in previous seasons. In 2025, Clement batted .277 and was recognized as a Gold Glove finalist. His playoff performance has been stellar, with a .429 batting average across 13 games. He has consistently stepped up, providing crucial hits at key moments.
Alejandro Kirk, a two-time All-Star, continues to be a cornerstone of the Blue Jays’ lineup. Despite being an unlikely star at 5-foot-8 and 245 pounds, Kirk has proven his value, hitting .282 with 15 home runs during the regular season. His continued success in the playoffs, including multiple home runs in the division series, has solidified his status as a clutch performer.
Daulton Varsho, a former catcher turned center fielder, has also made significant contributions. With 20 home runs and an .833 OPS this season, Varsho’s defensive skills and offensive consistency have made him an essential component of the team. His ability to slow down the game and execute well-thought-out strategies has impressed both coaches and teammates.
Lastly, Nathan Lukes has exemplified perseverance, making his major league debut at 28 after spending a decade in the minors. His solid performance, including a critical two-run double in Game 1 of the ALDS, underscores his importance to the team’s success.
These players, along with their more celebrated teammates, illustrate the depth of talent within the Blue Jays organization. As they prepare to face their formidable opponents in the World Series, the contributions of these under-the-radar stars remind fans that baseball is often won through teamwork and unexpected heroes.
