Wadena-Deer Creek and Pequot Lakes Shine in All-Area Volleyball

The volleyball season culminated with the announcement of the Brainerd Dispatch All-Area First Team, highlighting standout players from various schools. The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines and Pequot Lakes each showcased exceptional talent, with players recognized for their impressive performances throughout the season.

Wadena-Deer Creek, seeded sixth in Section 8-2A, saw their playoff journey end against the eventual Class 2A state champion, the Hawley Nuggets. Junior Payton Gravelle emerged as a key player, leading the area with a remarkable total of 408 kills. His performance earned him a spot on the All-State team in Class 2A, marking him as one of three Wolverines on the All-Area First Team. Alongside him, senior setter Ashley Pavek excelled with 848 set assists, securing the title of Park Region Conference Setter of the Year.

Pequot Lakes also made a significant impact, with three players earning First Team honors. Notably, senior June Ruud was named the Brainerd Dispatch All-Area Player of the Year. Ruud’s season statistics were impressive, featuring 356 kills and 383 digs. Additionally, senior Halie Bengtson, recognized as the Granite Ridge Conference Defensive Player of the Year, led the area with 561 digs.

Brainerd secured two positions on the First Team, showcasing the talents of outside hitter Cora Clough and setter/hitter Bella Goggleye. Clough recorded 154 kills during the season, while Goggleye contributed with 109 kills and 345 set assists, both athletes honored as All-Central Lakes Conference selections.

Other notable athletes included junior Camryn Armburst from Crosby-Ironton, who achieved 572 set assists, and Kali Brigmon from Little Falls, who tallied 240 kills. A comprehensive list of the players who made the First Team includes representatives from Crosby-Ironton, Little Falls, Pillager, and Pine River-Backus, all of whom were nominated by their coaches and selected by the Dispatch sports department.

The statistics reveal the depth of talent across the area. For example, Wadena-Deer Creek’s Kennedy Ness recorded 276 kills, while Alexa Pietig from Pequot Lakes achieved 211 kills and 359 set assists. The standout performances of these players reflect their hard work and dedication throughout the season.

As the season draws to a close, the achievements of these athletes not only highlight their individual skills but also showcase the competitive spirit of high school volleyball in the region.
