Vanderbilt University has reached the top 10 in college football for the first time since 1947. This milestone comes as part of the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll, which underwent significant changes after a weekend where nine ranked teams suffered losses. Ohio State remains at No. 1 for the eighth consecutive week, following a commanding 34-0 victory over Wisconsin.

The poll’s shake-up reflects a season full of surprises, as four teams in the top 10 fell in the same week for the third time this season. The nine losses among ranked teams mark the highest since Week 5 of 2022, when ten teams lost, according to data from Sportradar. Notably, four of the defeats came at the hands of unranked opponents.

Ohio State secured 60 first-place votes, an increase of ten from the previous week. Indiana improved its program-record ranking to No. 2 after a decisive win over Michigan State, garnering the remaining six first-place votes. This marks Ohio State’s tenth straight appearance in the top five, extending its active streak in the poll.

Vanderbilt’s Remarkable Rise

Texas A&M climbed to No. 3, achieving its highest ranking since 1995. Alabama, now ranked No. 4, has its best position of this season, while Georgia at No. 5 returns to the top five after a brief absence. Georgia has now appeared in the poll for 140 consecutive weeks, the second-longest active streak behind Alabama’s 287 weeks.

Vanderbilt’s ascent follows a 31-24 triumph over then-No. 10 LSU, marking its first win against the Tigers since 1990. With a current record of 6-1, the Commodores are experiencing their best start since 1950 and have secured victories over two ranked opponents this season.

The top ten is rounded out by Oregon, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, Miami, and Vanderbilt. Oregon rebounded from a previous loss to Indiana with a resounding road win against Rutgers. Georgia Tech’s victory over Duke propels it into the top 10 for the first time since 2014, and its highest ranking since 2009. In contrast, Mississippi slipped three spots following its loss to Georgia, and Miami fell seven places after being defeated by unranked Louisville.

Notable Rankings and Upcoming Matches

Louisville makes its season debut in the Top 25 at No. 19, with the Cardinals overcoming a long-standing challenge against top 10 teams on the road. Virginia, now ranked No. 16, enjoys its highest position since 2007.

Texas Tech’s first loss this season came at the hands of Arizona State, which resulted in a seven-spot drop to No. 14. LSU faced the most significant decline, dropping ten spots to No. 20, its lowest ranking of the season. Illinois returned to the rankings at No. 23, while Arizona State re-entered at No. 24 after its win over a top-10 opponent for the first time since 2019. Michigan’s 17-point victory over Washington allowed the Wolverines to reclaim a spot in the rankings.

In terms of conference representation, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) leads with ten teams, followed by the Big Ten with five, the Big 12 with four, and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) also with four. The American Athletic Conference claims one spot.

Looking ahead, several ranked matchups are on the horizon, including No. 3 Texas A&M visiting No. 20 LSU and No. 8 Mississippi traveling to No. 13 Oklahoma. Missouri, ranked No. 15, will take on No. 10 Vanderbilt in what promises to be an exciting contest.

As the season progresses, teams will continue to jockey for position in the rankings, keeping fans on the edge of their seats as college football’s competitive landscape evolves.
