The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup concluded its 110th edition on October 1, 2025, with Nashville SC emerging victorious over Austin FC at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas. This tournament, the oldest ongoing soccer competition in the United States, showcased the essence of open competition, where teams from various levels, including amateurs, vie for the chance to lift the coveted trophy. The event captured the imagination of soccer fans, offering thrilling matchups and the potential for underdog stories.

Kelsie Hawkins, Director of Media Operations at U.S. Soccer, emphasized the tournament’s significance, stating, “The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is truly the embodiment of our mission to grow the game at every level, from local community clubs all the way to the professionals.” The U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) aimed to enhance the tournament’s visibility during a pivotal time for American soccer, particularly with the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup set to be hosted in North America.

Innovative Broadcasting Partnerships Enhance Viewership

To elevate the tournament’s profile, USSF partnered with CBS Sports to stream every match on Paramount+ and broadcast selected games on CBS Sports Network and CBS Sports Golazo Network. Hawkins drew parallels to the excitement of college basketball’s March Madness, remarking, “The U.S. Open Cup is our version of March Madness: unpredictable, emotional, and unifying.” She noted that fans expect an immersive experience with high-quality storytelling and behind-the-scenes access, which the production aimed to deliver.

The tournament featured 95 games spanning eight months, presenting a significant logistical challenge. NEP Group, the exclusive producer since 2019, played a vital role in executing the tournament’s ambitious production plans. Mike Freedman, Vice President and Executive Producer at NEP Connected Solutions, expressed pride in the collaboration, stating, “It has been a seamless collaboration not only leading into this final but throughout the entirety of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.”

A Groundbreaking Final Production

The final match in Austin showcased an unprecedented level of production, with a budget of approximately $600,000 for the championship. CBS Sports delivered extensive live coverage, featuring both onsite and remote studio segments. Mike Nastri, Senior Director and Coordinating Producer at CBS Sports, highlighted the significance of their expanded presence, noting that it brought fans closer to the action through authentic, informative, and entertaining coverage.

The production team operated a 12-camera setup, including super-slo-mo technology for dynamic replays. The use of a gimbal Steadicam allowed for fluid coverage of game action and goal celebrations, enhancing the visual storytelling. Hawkins pointed out that this innovative approach provided a unique look at the championship, elevating the viewing experience for fans.

Over 100 crew members contributed to the production, ensuring high-quality coverage throughout the tournament. NEP supplied the technical staff, while CBS Sports provided on-air talent and studio production. The collaborative efforts of both organizations and numerous individuals were essential in successfully executing the tournament’s extensive broadcasts.

As the U.S. Open Cup continues to grow in stature and popularity, the investment in its presentation reflects the broader momentum of soccer in the United States. The tournament not only serves as a competitive platform but also aims to embed soccer deeper into the cultural fabric of the nation, ushering in a new era for the sport.
