Ogden police have detained a second juvenile suspect in the shooting death of a Ben Lomond High School student, which occurred earlier this month. The arrest took place in Denver on October 13, 2023, and the suspect is currently held in a juvenile detention facility in Utah as authorities prepare to file formal charges.

The victim, Mason Caballero, a 16-year-old student, was shot and killed on October 7, 2023. He was in a vehicle that came under fire from one or two individuals pursuing them in another car. This tragic event unfolded in front of Highland Junior High School in Ogden, approximately half a mile from Ben Lomond High School, shortly after classes had ended for the day.

The first suspect, Isaias Emanuel Carranza, also 16, was arrested on October 11, 2023. He faces serious charges in 2nd District Court in Ogden, including aggravated murder and 28 additional counts related to the incident. According to police, Carranza was driving along Gramercy Avenue when he began firing a weapon at the car containing Caballero and two other individuals.

The investigation revealed that a bullet struck the trunk of the vehicle carrying Caballero, resulting in his death. Charging documents indicate that video footage reviewed by investigators showed a front-seat passenger aiming a handgun out of the window, allegedly firing rounds at Caballero’s vehicle.

With the second suspect now in custody, the Ogden Police Department has announced that no additional suspects are being sought. In their statement, they highlighted the effective collaboration between investigators, partner agencies, and community members, which played a crucial role in identifying and apprehending the suspects involved.

Police have expressed their commitment to thoroughly investigating the case, ensuring that justice is served for Mason Caballero and his family. The Ogden community continues to mourn the loss of a young life, while law enforcement pursues every lead to bring closure to this tragic incident.
