On December 5, 2023, the legacy of former NBA player Ryan Reid was celebrated at Boyd Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. During a special ceremony prior to the boys’ basketball game against Dillard High School, Reid’s jersey number, 42, was officially retired, and a banner commemorating his achievements was unveiled in the gymnasium.

Reid, a standout player at Boyd Anderson, graduated in 2005 and went on to excel at Florida State University. He earned recognition as a first-team All-County selection by the Sun Sentinel during his high school career. Tragically, Reid passed away on July 9, 2023, after what has been reported as a medical emergency. He was 38 years old at the time of his death.

The ceremony brought together Reid’s family, friends, and former teammates. His wife, Rebecca, and their two children traveled from Tampa to participate in the honoring of Reid’s memory. The orange banner displaying his jersey number now hangs proudly from the gym’s rafters, a lasting tribute to his impact on the school and the sport.

Reid’s basketball journey included a notable stint in the NBA, where he became the second alumnus of the Cobras to play professionally, following Hall of Famer Mitch Richmond. Reid made five appearances with the Oklahoma City Thunder during his career. He also represented the Jamaican national team, showcasing his talents on an international level.

Before the game, fellow NBA players, including Russell Westbrook and Nick Collison, shared heartfelt remembrances of Reid. In a video tribute, Westbrook, who is currently in his 18th NBA season with the Sacramento Kings, praised Reid as “a great human being and great individual.” This sentiment echoed throughout the gym, as attendees reflected on Reid’s contributions both on and off the court.

During his high school career, Reid was a dominant force in the paint, averaging 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks per game over his final three seasons. His performance not only earned him accolades but also created a lasting legacy that continues to inspire current and future players.

The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of Reid’s impact on his community and the sport of basketball. As the Boyd Anderson Cobras move forward, they carry with them the memory of Ryan Reid, a player whose dedication and talent will not be forgotten.
