Remembering Kevin Keating: A Legacy Beyond the Football Field

Kevin Keating, a prominent figure in Pennsylvania high school football, passed away on September 25, 2023, at the age of 70. His extensive career as a coach at Pottsville High School and Shenandoah Valley has left an indelible mark on the sport and the lives of countless players, colleagues, and community members. With a career record of 166-110-4, Keating stands as Pottsville’s all-time winningest coach, celebrated for leading the Tide to 15 playoff appearances, three District XI championships, and significant appearances in state championship games in 2005 and 2006.
Keating began his coaching journey at Pottsville in 1980, serving various roles until 2012. He also made contributions as head coach at Shenandoah Valley from 2017 to 2019 and held an assistant position at Lafayette College. His remarkable achievements led to his induction into the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2018. Reflecting on this honor, Keating expressed surprise and attributed his success to the dedication of his assistant coaches and players.
Impact on and off the Field
While statistics and titles define many coaches’ legacies, Keating’s influence extended far beyond the field. He was remembered not only for his tactical acumen but also for his role as a mentor, educator, and friend. His former players and colleagues often highlight his profound impact on their lives.
“Coach affected me in so many different ways throughout my life,” said Ken Frie, a Pottsville graduate. Frie recalled how Keating supported him during challenging personal times, illustrating the coach’s commitment to his players’ well-being beyond football.
Former Marian coach Stan Dakosty emphasized Keating’s embodiment of the values of toughness and community pride. He described the atmosphere at Pottsville High School Stadium during games, attributing much of that spirit to Keating’s leadership. Dakosty remarked, “When I watch coaches, I always think, would I want my son to play for this guy? I would not hesitate if my son had the opportunity to play for Kevin Keating.”
A Lasting Legacy
Keating’s legacy continues to resonate in the Pottsville community, where current coaches are committed to honoring his influence. Brennan, the current head coach, underscored the responsibility to uphold the traditions established by Keating. “We have an outstanding responsibility to make sure that tradition and history continues,” he stated.
Keating was also known for supporting aspiring coaches. Chuck Kutz, head coach at Blue Mountain, recalled how Keating mentored him during his early coaching career, helping him navigate the complexities of leadership. Kutz noted, “Coach Keating spearheaded a combine for all Schuylkill County schools to promote county players and give them an opportunity at the collegiate level.”
Beyond football, Keating’s passion for education and mentorship was evident. He inspired students in the classroom with the same energy he brought to the field. Many former players echoed similar sentiments, praising his ability to instill life lessons through the sport.
“Football taught us lifelong lessons,” said former player Greg Mentzer. He remembered how Keating emphasized the importance of teamwork and community, lessons that have remained relevant in their lives long after graduation.
As Pottsville prepares to face Northwestern Lehigh at Veterans’ Memorial Stadium, conversations will undoubtedly reflect on Keating’s legacy. While many will recall his impressive coaching record, others will share stories of personal growth and community impact that defined his tenure.
Kevin Keating’s life and career exemplify the profound influence a coach can have, shaping not only athletes but entire communities. His dedication to youth development and education ensures that his legacy will endure for generations.
