Phillies Place Jordan Romano on Injured List, Shake Up Bullpen

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed right-handed pitcher Jordan Romano on the 15-day injured list due to inflammation in his right middle finger. This decision is part of a series of bullpen adjustments announced on Tuesday, which also includes the selection of Lou Trivino from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and the recall of rookie right-hander Daniel Robert from the same team. Additionally, the Phillies released right-hander Joe Ross following their 13-3 defeat against the New York Mets on Monday.
Romano, 32, struggled in Monday’s game, allowing four runs on two hits and issuing one walk while hitting a batter. He recorded two strikeouts but faced difficulty during his one inning of work. In his first season with the Phillies, Romano holds a record of 2-4, with eight saves and an earned run average (ERA) of 8.23. Over 49 relief appearances, he has issued 17 walks and struck out 47 batters across 42 and two-thirds innings.
A two-time All-Star during his tenure with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2022 and 2023, Romano has a career record of 22-21 with 113 saves and a 3.73 ERA. He has accumulated 332 strikeouts in 272 and one-third innings during 280 regular-season relief appearances. Romano joined the Phillies as a free agent in December 2022, signing a one-year contract worth a reported $8.5 million.
Ross, who is also 32 years old, pitched in the same game against the Mets, allowing three runs on three hits, alongside one walk and another hit batter within one inning. His season record stands at 2-1, with a 5.12 ERA over 37 games, including one start. Throughout his career, Ross has a record of 31-35 with a 4.28 ERA, having struck out 508 batters in 568 and one-third innings over 160 games. He was the 25th overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres and signed a one-year contract with the Phillies in December for a reported $4 million.
Robert, who turns 31 on August 19, has appeared in 12 relief games this season, pitching a total of 9 and one-third innings with a 5.79 ERA. He has issued eight walks and recorded 12 strikeouts. The Phillies acquired Robert from the Texas Rangers on May 1, trading minor league pitcher Enrique Segura in the deal. He was reinstated from the 15-day injured list and optioned to Lehigh Valley on August 17.
Trivino, 33, is another new addition to the bullpen. He signed with the Phillies as a free agent on August 4. Previously, he made appearances for both the San Francisco Giants (11 games) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (26 games) this season, holding a combined record of 3-1 with a 4.42 ERA. In those appearances, he walked 13 batters and struck out 29 over 38 and two-thirds innings.
These moves reflect the Phillies’ ongoing efforts to reinforce their bullpen as they navigate the remainder of the season. The impact of these changes will be closely monitored as the team strives for improved performance on the field.
