Orlando City Aims to Bounce Back Against D.C. United

Orlando City SC will return to Major League Soccer (MLS) action this weekend, visiting D.C. United in a matchup that marks their first league match in three weeks. The Lions, currently holding fifth place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 13-7-8 and 47 points, are eager to regain their momentum after a challenging period. D.C. United, on the other hand, has shown signs of improvement since the appointment of new manager Rene Weiler.
Orlando City enters this encounter on the heels of a disappointing three-match run in all competitions, which includes losses in both the semifinals and third-place match of the Leagues Cup. Their last league outing resulted in a significant 5-1 loss against Nashville on August 23, 2023. In this match, veteran forward Luis Muriel received a red card, leaving Orlando without one of their key players as they seek to end their current slump.
The absence of Muriel may present an opportunity for American striker Duncan McGuire. After struggling with two shoulder injuries that limited him to just 12 league appearances this season, McGuire has regained full fitness. The young striker previously netted 14 and 10 goals in his first two MLS seasons. His potential return to form could be a significant boost for the Lions as they navigate the final stretch of the regular season.
Manager Oscar Pareja expressed optimism regarding McGuire’s recovery, stating, “The medical department has done a terrific job on recovering him, and also the timing with Duncan has been great. At the moment that I see him today, he’s probably better than before.”
In contrast, D.C. United, with a record of 5-15-9 and 24 points, has already been eliminated from playoff contention. Despite this, the team has managed to earn five points in their last three matches under Weiler, who has emphasized building trust and cohesion within the squad. The Black-and-Red’s recent form includes a surprising 2-1 victory against New York City FC, with Gabriel Pirani scoring both goals.
Weiler noted the importance of fostering a team mentality, stating, “The first goal was to get a bit more trust back. A little bit more of belief in ourselves. And at the end, only the results help do that. And to be more a team, to defend all together.”
As Orlando City aims to correct their trajectory, they will need to elevate their performance against a D.C. United side that, while struggling in the standings, is gaining confidence under new leadership. With both teams facing unique challenges, the matchup promises to be a compelling fixture in the MLS calendar.
