Notre Dame Football Secures First Transfer Commitment for 2026
Notre Dame football has made its first move in the transfer portal for the 2026 season by securing a commitment from defensive back DJ McKinney. This announcement, made on January 9, 2026, marks a significant addition for the Irish following a period of intensive recruitment efforts across various positions.
McKinney, who previously played at Colorado, visited Notre Dame on the same day he committed after evaluating options at Ohio State and Texas Tech. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 180 pounds, the Colleyville, Texas native was a three-star recruit in high school and earned honorable mention all-conference recognition from Big 12 coaches in 2024.
Despite a challenging 2025 season for Colorado, where an unspecified injury sidelined him for the final three games, McKinney recorded impressive statistics. He finished the season with 35 tackles, one interception, and four pass breakups, while participating in 670 total snaps, including 73 on special teams. Previously, McKinney had a standout season in 2024, playing all 13 games and amassing 62 tackles and three interceptions.
Career Highlights and Future Prospects
Known as Dylahn Jordan McKinney, he has one year of eligibility left and is expected to compete for the starting nickelback position, which was held by DeVonta Smith, a former Alabama transfer. Smith is currently preparing for the NFL Combine, leaving sophomore Dallas Golden as the leading candidate for the slot role. McKinney’s experience and skills as an outside cornerback will bolster the team’s depth, especially if injuries affect the starting duo of Leonard Moore and Christian Gray.
Throughout his college career, McKinney demonstrated consistent performance, missing only 21 tackles over 2,093 snaps, resulting in a missed tackle rate of just 13.2%. His versatility was evident through his playing time at various positions, including 91 snaps at nickelback or box safety.
McKinney’s journey began at Oklahoma State, where he played for two seasons before transferring to Colorado. His tenure with the Buffaloes included a notable performance in the Texas Bowl against Texas A&M, capping off his time with the Cowboys.
Impact of Transfers on Notre Dame’s Roster
The addition of McKinney comes at a time when Notre Dame has seen significant turnover in its defensive backfield, with six players departing through the transfer portal. Recently, Karson Hobbs transferred to Florida State, joining former teammates Cree Thomas (Colorado) and safety JaDon Blair (Missouri) in seeking new opportunities.
As the Irish look to fortify their roster for the upcoming season, McKinney’s commitment represents not only an immediate upgrade in talent but also a strategic move to build depth in a critical area of the defense. With the 2026 season approaching, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how McKinney integrates into the team and contributes to Notre Dame’s aspirations on the field.
