Mustangs Claim Thrilling State Volleyball Title with Saxlund’s Power
BISMARCK — The West Fargo Sheyenne Mustangs captured the North Dakota Division AA volleyball state championship on March 16, 2024, with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Fargo Davies. The win, secured at the Bismarck Event Center, marked the third state title for the Mustangs and the third for junior Peyton Saxlund, who played a pivotal role in the match.
Saxlund, who was part of Sheyenne’s first state championship team in 2022 as an eighth grader, delivered an impressive performance with 19 kills during the final. Her decisive kill at match point left her momentarily stunned before she joined her jubilant teammates in celebration. “I didn’t even realize it was game point,” she said, reflecting on the moment.
The championship victory was a culmination of Saxlund’s hard work and determination throughout the tournament. She finished with a tournament high of 52 kills, showcasing her ability to perform under pressure. “She is an explosive hitter,” said Mustangs head coach Leah Newton. “Even in a tough situation, she wants the ball in her hands. You need someone like that on the court.”
Saxlund’s teammates have been a significant source of motivation for her. “They push me so hard and I do it for them,” she noted. Her energy and confidence were evident throughout the match, particularly during a critical moment in the third set when she executed her tenth kill of the night, a powerful swing near the left pin. This was her third consecutive match with double-digit kills, having recorded 11 kills in the quarterfinals and 22 kills in the semifinals.
Setter Brynlie Richman, who also earned a spot on the all-tournament team with a match-high 66 assists, praised Saxlund’s impact on the team. “She’s so confident in herself and her teammates,” Richman said.
Over her four seasons with the Mustangs, Saxlund has developed into a key player, consistently demonstrating her strength and presence on the court. “She’s come a long way,” Newton added. “She’s gotten stronger, more confident, and developed into a court presence and a go-to.”
With a remarkable total of 849 kills over the past three seasons, Saxlund is already looking ahead to her final year. “We’re going to come in with the same energy and same fight,” she promised, setting her sights on another state tournament run in the fall.
The Mustangs’ victory not only cements their position in North Dakota volleyball history but also highlights the talent and determination of players like Saxlund, who continue to inspire their teammates and fans alike.
