Mineral Area Volleyball Team Faces Tough Challenge in NJCAA Opener
The Mineral Area volleyball team, despite an impressive season, will face a formidable opponent in their opening match of the NJCAA tournament. The Cardinals earned a No. 14 seed in the 16-team bracket, which was released on November 9, 2025. Their first match will be against the three-time defending national champion Florida Southwestern, scheduled for Wednesday at the Dunn Center in Clarksville, Tennessee.
Mineral Area’s journey to the tournament included victories over five ranked opponents and a remarkable overall record of 27 wins and just 2 losses. The team secured an automatic bid to the NJCAA tournament following a decisive straight-set victory against Iowa Western, which avenged an earlier defeat. Despite these accomplishments, the selection committee placed the Cardinals lower than expected, indicating a challenging road ahead.
Florida Southwestern, boasting a record of 24-3, is a significant contender in the tournament. The team features standout players such as outside hitter Sara Gamboa, who averages 3.79 kills per set, and right-side hitter Letizia Okonofua, with 3.11 kills per set. The Cardinals will need to deliver an exceptional performance to overcome this strong opponent.
Mineral Area heads into the tournament as the champions of Region 16 and the Central B District. This marks their sixth appearance in the NJCAA tournament, underscoring their competitive history. The team is led by Lara Gilardi, who produces an impressive 3.40 kills per set, while Gabrielle Damborowiski contributes with 3.25 kills per set.
Defensively, Sara Pjevic has made a significant impact this season, totaling 112 blocks, including 17 solo blocks. Her teammate, middle blocker Olivia Shaw, has added another 103 blocks. The team’s setter, Belen Ferrufino, is on the verge of a personal milestone, needing just five assists to reach 1,000 for the season.
In the back row, libero Ava Penuel stands out with an average of 4.00 digs per set, providing crucial defensive support. Additionally, Duda Passos ranks third on the roster in kills, further enhancing the team’s offensive capabilities.
As the tournament progresses, the Cardinals will need to harness their skills and experience to navigate through formidable opponents. The competition is fierce, with the No. 2 seed Weatherford from Texas riding a 20-match winning streak, and the No. 4 seed Northeastern from Colorado boasting an impressive 28 consecutive victories.
Mineral Area’s upcoming match against Florida Southwestern will serve as a true test of their resilience and determination. The Cardinals aim to make a strong statement in the NJCAA tournament, demonstrating their ability to compete at the highest level of collegiate volleyball.
