LSU Tigers Suffer Defeat to Texas A&M, Spark ‘Fire Kelly’ Chants
The LSU Tigers’ struggles continued on Saturday night as they were defeated 49-25 by the No. 3 Texas A&M Aggies at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge. This loss marked the Tigers’ third defeat in their last four games, dropping their record to 2-3 in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
Fans expressed their frustration during the game, with chants of “Fire Kelly” resonating throughout the stadium, especially as the match concluded. The second half saw a significant shift, with Texas A&M outscoring LSU 35-7. This disappointing performance follows a strong start to the season, where LSU began with a 4-0 record and reached a national ranking of No. 4.
With this defeat, the Tigers are now likely to drop out of the Top 25 rankings. Coach Brian Kelly, who has a record of 34-14 in his four seasons at LSU, faces mounting pressure as the team prepares for an open date before traveling to face Alabama on November 8, 2023. The situation has escalated to the point where speculation about his job security is rampant. Reports indicate that if LSU were to part ways with Kelly, they would owe him a buyout exceeding $52 million.
In the postgame press conference, Kelly acknowledged the challenging circumstances, stating, “It’s impossible for the head coach that’s been here for four years… to think anything other than the fact that it’s a tough time.” He emphasized that the decision regarding his future is not in his hands.
The victory for Texas A&M was particularly notable as it marked their first win at Tiger Stadium since joining the SEC in 2012. The Aggies, now the only unbeaten team in the conference with an overall record of 8-0 and 5-0 in SEC play, showcased a strong performance throughout the game. Marcel Reed contributed significantly with two rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns, demonstrating the Aggies’ offensive strength.
As the LSU Tigers look ahead, the pressure on Kelly’s tenure intensifies. The upcoming match against Alabama will be critical for both the team’s season and Kelly’s future at the university. The extent of the fans’ discontent suggests that the path forward will be closely scrutinized.
With the season progressing, it remains to be seen whether LSU can regain its footing and silence the calls for Kelly’s dismissal, or if the chants will continue to echo in the stands.
