Join the Fight Against Alzheimer’s at September’s Walk Event

The Alzheimer’s Association is hosting its annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s on September 27, 2024, at the Jamestown Community College Campus in Olean. This event stands as the world’s largest initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. Community members are encouraged to participate, as this gathering aims to honor loved ones affected by the disease and advocate for a future free from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

Statistics Highlight the Urgency of Support

Currently, there are more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, alongside over 11 million family members who provide unpaid care. In Allegany County, approximately 900 individuals aged 65 and older, or 10.2% of the population, are affected by Alzheimer’s, according to a report from 2023. Similarly, Cattaraugus County reported 1,600 individuals, also constituting 10.2% of its population, living with the disease as of 2024.

These figures underscore the critical need for community support and resources. Many caregivers in these regions are often family members who rely on organizations like the Western New York Alzheimer’s Association for assistance and guidance.

Investing in Research and Care

Participation in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s not only raises funds but also contributes to promising research initiatives aimed at finding effective treatments. The funds collected during the event will directly support care for those affected and enhance access to treatment options for all who may benefit.

Sandra Keough, co-chair of the Cattaraugus/Allegany County Walk to End Alzheimer’s, emphasizes the importance of collective action. “We’re closer than ever to stopping Alzheimer’s disease,” she stated. “To get there, we need you. Join us to help us get one step closer to a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.”
