New York Jets rookie tight end Mason Taylor will be sidelined for at least one week due to a high-ankle sprain, as confirmed by head coach Aaron Glenn on Tuesday. The 21-year-old player was selected in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, being the 42nd overall pick after an impressive collegiate career at Louisiana State University (LSU) where he recorded 55 receptions for 546 yards and two touchdowns.

Taylor, whose pedigree includes a father, Hall of Fame defensive end Jason Taylor, and an uncle, Hall of Fame linebacker Zach Thomas, has been in a competitive battle with teammate Jeremy Ruckert for the starting tight end position throughout training camp. The injury poses a setback for Taylor as he seeks to establish himself in the Jets’ offensive lineup.

In addition to Taylor’s injury, Glenn provided updates on several other players. Defensive tackle Byron Cowart is dealing with an ankle injury that forced him to leave practice on a cart, while edge rusher Will McDonald is experiencing back spasms. Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor has also missed practice due to a knee issue, but the coaching staff believes the injury is not serious.

The Jets are set to begin their preseason on Saturday, August 12, 2024, against the Green Bay Packers. The team’s regular season opener will take place at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 7, 2024. With Taylor’s absence, the Jets will need to adjust their offensive strategy as they prepare for these upcoming games.
