Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz Lead Seeds at U.S. Open
Defending champion Jannik Sinner and 2022 winner Carlos Alcaraz have secured the top two seeds for the upcoming U.S. Open, scheduled to begin on August 27, 2023, at the Billy Jean King Tennis Center in New York. The announcement was made on Thursday, revealing exciting matchups for both players as they aim to advance deep into the tournament.
Sinner’s journey starts with a match against Vit Kopriva from the Czech Republic. The Italian, who captured the title last year, faces a challenging path, including a potential encounter with Jack Draper, the No. 5 seed from Britain. The competition is fierce, with several top players poised to disrupt Sinner’s title defense.
Alcaraz, on the other hand, begins his campaign against Reilly Opelka, known for his formidable serve. Last year, Alcaraz experienced an unexpected early exit, falling to Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands in the second round. This time, he hopes to avoid similar missteps and progress further in the tournament. Should he advance, a likely semifinal opponent could be Novak Djokovic, the seventh seed and four-time U.S. Open champion from Serbia, who last triumphed at this event in 2023.
Top Contenders and Their Matchups
The main draw also features other noteworthy players. Alexander Zverev is seeded No. 3, with Taylor Fritz right behind him at No. 4. Fritz, who faced Sinner in last year’s final, looks to make a strong showing this year.
Completing the top five seeds is Ben Shelton, who earned the No. 6 seed. Notable players in the top ten include Alex de Minaur from Australia, seeded No. 8, Karen Khachanov from Russia at No. 9, and Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, who rounds out the top ten at No. 10.
Fellow Americans Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe also made it into the top 20, seeded No. 14 and No. 17, respectively, adding to the competitive landscape of this year’s tournament.
As the excitement builds for the U.S. Open, fans and players alike are eager to witness the unfolding drama on the courts. With top contenders gearing up for their matches, this year’s tournament promises to deliver thrilling tennis action through to the finals.
