Holy Cross Defeats Brossart 6-3 in Hard-Fought Football Match

In a tightly contested matchup, Holy Cross secured a narrow 6-3 victory over Bishop Brossart on October 14, 2023, at the Mustang Athletic Complex in Alexandria, Kentucky. The win improved Holy Cross’s record to 7-0 overall and marked their first victory in Class 1A, District 4 play.
The game showcased the resilience and unity of the Holy Cross team, a quality emphasized by quarterback Brian Ferguson. Following the game, he remarked, “Our team is getting more disciplined, more together, more of a family.” This bond appears to be the cornerstone of their success, enabling them to thrive even in challenging circumstances.
Holy Cross faced a different kind of challenge than usual. Coming into the game, they had averaged an impressive 42.5 points per game, often winning by substantial margins. However, the match against Bishop Brossart proved to be a gritty affair, with both teams struggling offensively. Ferguson noted the challenges they encountered, saying, “I was making mistakes, but they were still with me.”
Bishop Brossart took an early lead in the second quarter with a 22-yard field goal by Max Runge. Despite the initial momentum, the Mustangs struggled offensively, ending the game with just 46 total yards and one turnover. Their coach, Adam Kozerski, acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, “We’ve got to fix a couple of things on our offensive line, find ways to get receivers open, and build confidence in our young quarterback.”
The turning point came late in the third quarter when Ferguson scrambled for a 23-yard touchdown run, ultimately leading Holy Cross to victory. Despite missing the extra point, the defense held strong against a desperate push from Bishop Brossart in the final moments of the game.
Holy Cross head coach Curt Spencer praised his players for their perseverance, highlighting the long-standing relationships among team members. “These kids have been together for a long time and they are a family. They do everything together, they love each other and pick each other up,” he said.
As Bishop Brossart suffered their fourth consecutive loss, dropping to 2-5 overall, they are set to face Ludlow next week. Meanwhile, Holy Cross looks to solidify their position for the playoffs with upcoming matches against Trimble County and Ludlow.
The final score reflected the competitive nature of high school football, with Holy Cross edging out Bishop Brossart in a game that was as much about determination and teamwork as it was about skill. As the season progresses, both teams will look to address their respective challenges, aiming for improvement in their upcoming games.
