Heisman Winner Fernando Mendoza Celebrates Mother’s Courage on National Stage
On January 1, 2026, Fernando Mendoza, the quarterback for Indiana University, took center stage as he led his team in the Rose Bowl against Alabama. The day was particularly significant for Mendoza, who had recently been awarded the prestigious Heisman Trophy on December 13, 2025. The honor is a testament not only to his exceptional skills on the field but also to the profound influence of his mother, Elsa Mendoza, who has battled multiple sclerosis for nearly two decades.
A Lifelong Partnership
Elsa Mendoza, a former tennis player at the University of Miami, has faced numerous challenges since her diagnosis with multiple sclerosis approximately 18 years ago. Her health deteriorated significantly five years ago, coinciding with her battle against COVID-19, which exacerbated her condition. Currently, she relies on a wheelchair, yet her spirit remains unyielded, inspiring her sons to advocate for awareness and funding to combat the disease.
In a heartfelt letter published in The Players’ Tribune just before the Heisman ceremony, Elsa reflected on her unique bond with Fernando. She expressed, “You’re a teammate at heart. I’ve been lucky enough to know that for a much longer time than most people… and not just because I’m your mom. But because I feel like I was your very first teammate.” This poignant message underscored the deep connection they share, emphasizing the mutual support they have provided each other throughout their lives.
Celebrating Achievements Together
During his acceptance speech for the Heisman Trophy, Fernando paid tribute to his mother, stating, “Mommy, this is your trophy as much as it is mine. You’ve always been my biggest fan. You’re my life. You’re my why.” His words resonated not only with the audience but also highlighted the sacrifices Elsa has made for her family.
Fernando continued, acknowledging the strength he draws from her resilience. “You taught me that toughness doesn’t need to be loud. It can be quiet and strong. It’s choosing hope. It’s believing in yourself when the world doesn’t give you much reason to. Together, you and I are rewriting what people think is possible. I love you.” These sentiments encapsulate the essence of their relationship, where love and determination transcend physical challenges.
Born in Boston and raised in Miami, Fernando, along with his brother Alberto Mendoza, who serves as Indiana’s primary backup quarterback, has carved a path of success in college football. Both brothers share a commitment to not only excelling in sports but also raising awareness for multiple sclerosis, motivated by their mother’s journey.
As the Rose Bowl unfolds, the Mendoza family’s story serves as a powerful reminder of resilience and support in the face of adversity. Their collective efforts to fight against multiple sclerosis inspire many, demonstrating how personal challenges can lead to broader advocacy and change.
