Greg Gagne Reflects on Hulk Hogan’s Departure from AWA

Former professional wrestler Greg Gagne recently shared his reflections on the departure of Hulk Hogan from the American Wrestling Association (AWA) to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) during an appearance on Busted Open Radio. Gagne discussed the circumstances surrounding Hogan’s exit and expressed his thoughts on the impact it had on the AWA.
Gagne’s Insights on Hogan’s Departure
Hogan’s transition from AWA to WWE marked a pivotal moment in wrestling history. Gagne recounted how Hogan had informed him of his decision to leave the promotion, notably without fulfilling his scheduled appearances. “Once he got so established in the AWA and we were really on a roll, he got the call from Vince McMahon, and away he went,” Gagne explained. He noted that Hogan’s departure left a negative impression on the AWA, particularly as he did not attend major events where he was expected to headline.
Gagne acknowledged that while he understood Hogan’s desire to seize the opportunity presented by WWE, he believed Hogan could have handled the situation more professionally. “It really hurt the AWA,” Gagne reflected. “He should have just finished out his deal, is all I ever told him.” Gagne emphasized that he has no regrets about his feelings toward Hogan’s decision, as it ultimately shaped the trajectory of both their careers.
Remembering Hogan’s Legacy
In the wake of Hogan’s recent passing, Gagne expressed his sorrow, highlighting Hogan’s positive traits. “He was genuinely a really good guy and a nice guy, and he listened and he worked hard,” Gagne said. “But all in all, he’s just a terrific guy. And it’s a huge, huge loss for not only the wrestling community, but for everybody because he was an icon, without a doubt.” Gagne’s remarks reflect the deep respect many within the wrestling industry hold for Hogan, who played a significant role in popularizing professional wrestling.
As fans and fellow wrestlers mourn the loss of Hogan, Gagne’s reflections serve as a reminder of the complexities and personal dynamics inherent in the world of professional wrestling. Hogan’s legacy continues to resonate, not just within the confines of the ring but also in the hearts of those who admired his work and contributions to the sport.
