Flyers Goalie Sam Ersson Struggles After Heavy Loss to Lightning
Philadelphia Flyers goalie Sam Ersson faced a challenging performance against the Tampa Bay Lightning, conceding seven goals on just 23 shots during a home game on January 14, 2024. The heavy defeat has left the young goaltender feeling “embarrassed” as he seeks to rebound from what he describes as a difficult stretch in his season.
In his 16 appearances this season, Ersson has recorded a record of 6-6-4, with a goals-against average of 3.33 and a save percentage of .858. These statistics reflect the highest goals-against average and lowest save percentage of his four-season NHL career, which spans 126 games. “I just got to find a way to flush these last few games and get back to where I want to be,” Ersson stated in a candid interview following the loss.
Reflecting on the season overall, Ersson expressed mixed feelings. “It’s weird. I would say, like the team is doing well, we’re winning, it’s a lot of fun in that sense, but at the same time, you want more out of yourself, and I’m disappointed in how I perform,” he told The Inquirer. Despite contributing to some big wins, he noted recent performances have been lacking, particularly the game against Tampa Bay where he felt he let down both his teammates and the fans.
In the last seven games, Ersson has only one victory, which came in a 3-1 win against the Chicago Blackhawks before the NHL holiday break. Since December 4, he has made seven starts out of 17 games, posting a record of 1-4-2 with a goals-against average of 3.80 and a save percentage of .844.
Despite these setbacks, Ersson remains determined to improve. “I’m not blaming anything like that. It comes down to me, how I perform, how I approach things,” he remarked. He acknowledged the challenges posed by a new coaching staff and system but emphasized the importance of trusting his game and pushing through adversity.
Statistics from Money Puck highlight Ersson’s current struggles. Among goalies with at least ten games played, he ranks fifth-worst in goals saved above average and is tied for last in save percentage. Moreover, he has faced the fewest high-danger shots among goalies, indicating that while he has saved some critical chances, his overall performance has not met expectations.
The Flyers’ defensive performance has also seen a decline, allowing a significant number of goals compared to last season when they finished at 3.45 goals allowed per game. Ersson noted, “So, for me, it all comes down to kind of how I play and how I perform.” He is intent on returning to a level of play that aligns with his capabilities, stating, “Just got to roll up the sleeves and grind away,” as he prepares for the upcoming rematch against the Lightning.
Looking ahead, the Flyers will face Tampa Bay again, and while it is expected that Dan Vladar will receive the start, Ersson may have opportunities to reclaim his position with the team facing a busy schedule. Coach Rick Tocchet emphasized the importance of resilience in the face of such challenges.
In a separate note, the Flyers are also managing injuries among key players. Forward Travis Konecny missed the game against the Lightning due to an upper-body injury, raising concerns about the team’s depth as they prepare for a demanding schedule in the coming weeks.
As the Flyers look to turn the tide, Ersson’s ability to bounce back from this recent defeat will be crucial for both his development and the team’s performance as they push through a critical stretch of games.
