A tragic incident unfolded in Florida earlier this week when Jason Kenney fatally shot his wife, Crystal Kenney, and critically injured his 13-year-old stepdaughter following a heated argument related to a Monday Night Football game. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has reported that the confrontation escalated after Kenney had been drinking while watching the San Francisco 49ers defeat the Indianapolis Colts.

According to Sheriff Grady Judd, the argument began when Crystal suggested switching off the game, prompting a violent dispute. As tensions rose, Crystal instructed her 12-year-old son to call 911, but in the chaos, the child ran to a neighbor’s house for assistance, hearing a gunshot en route. Authorities later found Crystal deceased from a gunshot wound to her head, while her daughter was discovered critically injured in her bedroom, having been shot in the face and shoulder.

The investigation revealed that Jason intended to harm his stepdaughter, who was rushed to a local hospital. Tragically, one bullet penetrated her nose and exited through the top of her head.

After the shooting, Jason fled the scene in his truck and contacted his sister in upstate New York, expressing remorse and indicating he would not face imprisonment. He stated, “I’ve done something very, very bad. Very bad. I did something terrible and this is the last time you’ll ever talk to me.”

Law enforcement located Jason at a relative’s residence where he was found in a shed, having taken his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In the aftermath, investigators discovered an undated note from Crystal, which expressed concern over Jason’s alcohol and drug use, stating, “You know, you’re drinking, you’re using cocaine again. This is not the way the family should be. You need God.”

Sheriff Judd noted that the family had a history of disturbances, with Crystal’s relatives indicating that Jason had exhibited abusive behavior. Despite this, there were no prior reports of domestic violence, and Jason had never faced legal action related to such incidents.

The surviving children are currently in the care of their grandparents. A family member expressed deep sorrow over the situation, stating, “I would tell my sister that I’m sorry that this happened to you. You didn’t deserve this.” The impact of this tragedy, occurring just days before Christmas, has left the community in shock and mourning.

Law enforcement continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, emphasizing the importance of addressing domestic violence and mental health issues within families.
