The Fitchburg Youth Soccer 7/8 boys team achieved a significant milestone by winning the championship at the prestigious Pepperell Fall Classic last weekend. This victory highlights the continued growth and success of soccer at Fitchburg High School, which has been benefiting from a strong youth soccer program.

Under the guidance of coach Jon Decoteau, the team demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork, finishing the tournament unbeaten. Competing in the U14 division, the Fitchburg Daredevils triumphed in four matches, showcasing their talent at the event known as the oldest youth soccer tournament in New England.

The team began their campaign with a commanding 9-0 victory over Ayer-Shirley, followed by a solid performance against Pepperell, winning 6-2. They continued their successful run with a convincing 7-2 win against Harvard, concluding pool play with a perfect 3-0 record in the A division’s Green Pool.

In the championship match, Fitchburg faced the White Pool champions, Hollis-Brookline Middle School, who had not conceded any goals throughout pool play. However, Fitchburg managed to secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory, marking a remarkable achievement for the team.

This championship win at the Pepperell Fall Classic is particularly noteworthy as it represents the second title for Decoteau’s squad, who also claimed victory in the same tournament as sixth graders in 2023. Furthermore, this accomplishment extends a streak of success for Fitchburg Youth Soccer; the girls’ 7/8 team won a championship at the same event last fall.

The impact of this success is evident as several players from last year’s girls’ team are now key contributors to the Fitchburg High varsity squad, which currently holds an impressive record of 10-1-2 heading into their next match. The thriving youth soccer program is evidently shaping the future of the sport in Fitchburg, setting a strong foundation for continued achievements on the field.
