EuroBasket Stars Praise Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Impact Ahead of Tournament
As the EuroBasket tournament approaches, basketball stars are highlighting the formidable presence of Giannis Antetokounmpo on the court. Having already secured an NBA Championship title with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021, Antetokounmpo is now focused on leading the Greek National Team toward gold at the upcoming EuroBasket 2024.
Giannis, a perennial candidate for the NBA MVP award, elevates his performance when representing his country. Santi Aldama, a Spanish player and member of the Memphis Grizzlies, remarked, “Giannis is different when he has Hellas on his chest. Him having the pride to play for his country every summer, you can see it’s different when he plays for his country.” Aldama emphasized the passion Antetokounmpo brings to the national team, showcasing his commitment to Greece.
During the 2022 EuroBasket, Giannis averaged an impressive 29.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. His contribution was pivotal in helping Greece qualify for the Olympics for the first time in 16 years, where he recorded 22.7 points and 4.3 rebounds in the qualifying matches. In the 2024 Paris Olympics, he further elevated his game, averaging 25.8 points and 6.3 rebounds.
Competing against Giannis presents a significant challenge, as Willy Hernangomez, the 2022 EuroBasket MVP, can attest. “He tries to destroy everybody in front of him. He plays super hard. He’s an example for other players – the way he plays. His work ethic is really impressive. One of the best,” Hernangomez stated, emphasizing Giannis’s relentless approach to the game.
Finnish basketball star Lauri Markkanen noted that Antetokounmpo’s skills extend beyond sheer physicality. “Giannis is really difficult to play one-on-one. You kind of load up on him and try to make him get rid of the ball. But he can do so many things on the floor,” Markkanen explained. He added that despite thorough scouting, Giannis possesses a variety of moves that make him especially tough to defend.
As the favorites to win the EuroBasket title, Serbia recognizes the threat posed by Antetokounmpo. Bogdan Bogdanovic described the challenge, stating, “I feel like when you play him, he’s just so athletic and you can’t make mistakes against him because he punishes you all the time.” He highlighted Giannis’s defensive prowess, noting, “There are no easy shots with him. And when he is running in transition, these three things are pretty much unstoppable.”
The Greek star has recently participated in friendly matches, showcasing his abilities. In a game against Latvia, he scored 25 points and secured 10 rebounds in just 15 minutes on the court. With the EuroBasket Group Stage games scheduled to begin on August 28, 2024, Giannis aims to lead Greece to victory and secure a coveted medal for his nation.
Before the tournament begins, Greece will face France in one final friendly contest on August 24, 2024. As players and fans alike anticipate EuroBasket, the spotlight remains on Giannis Antetokounmpo, whose impact on the game is undeniable and whose drive to succeed continues to inspire.
