Eagles Re-sign Britain Covey to Boost Punt Return Game

In a strategic move to enhance their punt return capabilities, the Philadelphia Eagles have re-signed wide receiver and punt return specialist Britain Covey to their practice squad. The announcement came on September 14, 2023, following Covey’s recent clearance from waivers with the Los Angeles Rams. This decision fills a significant void created earlier in the week when the Eagles released both Ainias Smith and Avery Williams.

Covey, who spent three seasons with the Eagles before becoming a free agent in March, brings valuable experience to a team that lacked an established punt returner. Training camp did not unveil a clear option, with third receiver Jahan Dotson handling punts during his college career at Penn State but lacking NFL experience in that role. Additionally, rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean, who had previously taken on punt-return duties when Covey was sidelined by injuries, is expected to play nearly every defensive snap, raising concerns about his availability for special teams.

Covey’s Performance History

Originally undrafted out of Utah in 2022, Covey showcased his capabilities during the 2023 season, averaging 14.4 yards on 29 returns, marking the third-best single-season average in Eagles franchise history. His performance placed him behind only Brian Westbrook‘s 2003 season and DeSean Jackson‘s 2009 campaign. Covey led the league with 417 punt-return yards and ranked third in the NFL overall, trailing only Marvin Mims and Derius Davis.

In addition to his return skills, Covey demonstrated potential on offense, recording a career-high six receptions in Week 2 of 2023. Despite a promising start, his progress was hindered in 2024, where he averaged 9.3 yards on 33 returns and did not register any receptions, largely due to injuries that limited him to just five games.

Strategic Additions and Future Prospects

The Eagles opted not to tender Covey as a restricted free agent, leading him to sign a one-year deal with the Rams. After being waived by Los Angeles, Covey cleared waivers without being claimed by another team. By bringing him back, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman retains the option to elevate Covey for game days without occupying a roster spot immediately.

In addition to Covey’s signing, the Eagles have also added veteran safety Marcus Epps and offensive tackle Luke Felix-Fualalo to their practice squad. Epps, previously with the Eagles from 2019 to 2022, will offer depth in a secondary affected by an injury to Andrew Mukuba. Felix-Fualalo, a player of Australian and Polynesian descent, fills the International Player Pathway exemption slot.

Covey’s career average of 11.3 yards is the ninth highest among undrafted players with at least 50 returns and ranks fourth in Eagles’ history, trailing only Ernie Steele, Brian Mitchell, and Darren Sproles. His experience and proven track record make him a strong candidate to be elevated for the season opener against Dallas on September 10, 2023.

As the Eagles prepare for the upcoming season, Covey’s return offers not only a solution to their punt return challenges but also adds depth and versatility to their roster, essential for their ambitions moving forward.
