Eagles Adjust Roster Ahead of Week 18, Starters Likely to Rest
The Philadelphia Eagles have made strategic roster adjustments ahead of Week 18, indicating that several key starters may sit out during their game against the Washington Commanders. General Manager Howie Roseman released veteran long snapper Charley Hughlett on Monday, following the team’s narrow victory over the Buffalo Bills, where they emerged 13-12. This move, while risky due to the potential for other teams to claim Hughlett off waivers, appears designed to facilitate better preparation for the final regular season matchup.
Although the Eagles have a chance to secure the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs by winning against Washington and hoping for a Detroit Lions victory over the Chicago Bears, it seems the team is prioritizing rest for its starters. The decision to rest key players may stem from the confidence that a team led by rookie quarterback Tanner McKee can compete against a Commanders squad guided by Josh Johnson.
Hughlett has cleared waivers and will return to the Eagles as part of their practice squad, according to his agent, Brett Tessler. He is expected to be one of two practice squad elevations for the upcoming game. To accommodate Hughlett’s return, the Eagles released edge defender Titus Leo from the practice squad on Tuesday.
The Eagles are likely to add either linebacker Patrick Johnson or safety Andre’ Sam to their 53-man roster from the practice squad. Both players had reached the maximum elevation limit during the regular season, which precludes their participation without being formally added to the roster.
Another potential roster move involves activating rookie offensive tackle Cameron Williams from injured reserve. The Eagles initiated Williams’ 21-day practice window on December 11, giving the team until January 1 to either add him to the active roster or place him on season-ending inactive status. However, with veteran lineman Lane Johnson expected to return for the playoffs, it is likely that Williams will remain on injured reserve.
As the Eagles prepare for this crucial game, their ability to navigate roster changes will be critical. The team’s strategic decisions reflect a balance between immediate performance and long-term postseason aspirations.
