Daniel Altmaier Shocks Stefanos Tsitsipas in Thrilling US Open Match

German tennis player Daniel Altmaier stunned Stefanos Tsitsipas in a gripping five-set match at the US Open on September 1, 2023. Altmaier triumphed with a score of 6-7, 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, marking another significant upset in his emerging Grand Slam career. The match extended beyond four hours and was filled with dramatic moments, including a rare coaching violation against Tsitsipas’s father, Apostolos Tsitsipas.
The contest began with intense rallies and closely contested games, setting the tone for a match that would keep spectators on the edge of their seats. Chair umpire James Keothavong intervened multiple times, addressing unruly crowd behavior and ultimately issuing a code violation for Apostolos Tsitsipas. The infraction occurred when he provided verbal instructions to his son while Tsitsipas was positioned away from his father, a move still prohibited under current rules allowing on-court coaching.
Despite the distractions, Altmaier demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout the match. Having already played over nine hours of tennis in the tournament’s first two rounds, he showcased his endurance and mental strength. Tsitsipas had a chance to close out the match, holding a match point late in the final set. However, Altmaier countered with bold shot-making, erasing the match point and then seizing control to secure his victory.
As the match concluded, Tsitsipas expressed frustration over Altmaier’s use of an underhand serve during the fourth set, leading to boos from the crowd as he left the court. This loss marks another disappointing early exit for Tsitsipas, who has not advanced past the second round of a Grand Slam since the 2024 French Open. This defeat represents his sixth consecutive major where he failed to progress beyond the opening rounds, highlighting a challenging season in which he has struggled to achieve consecutive wins.
On the other hand, Altmaier’s victory propels him into the third round of the US Open for the first time, where he will face Alex de Minaur, the tournament’s 13th seed. The upcoming match raises questions about Altmaier’s stamina after such a taxing start to the tournament, but his performance against Tsitsipas underscores his ability to pull off marathon upsets on the biggest stages.
Altmaier’s journey continues to gain attention as he builds on his recent success, including a round of 16 appearance at the 2025 French Open. The tennis world will be watching closely as he seeks to make his mark in the tournament.
