Central-Phenix City and Moody Claim State Titles in Flag Football Showdown
The 2025 AL.com Flag Football Poll saw significant changes following the state championship finals held last week at Birmingham’s Progressive Field. The top teams in both classes showcased their dominance, culminating in impressive victories that not only solidified their rankings but also highlighted their exceptional seasons.
In the 6A/7A classification, the No. 1 ranked Central-Phenix City secured its third consecutive state championship by decisively defeating No. 2 Vestavia Hills with a score of 46-7. This victory capped off an unbeaten season for Central, who finished with an impressive record of 20-0 and extended their winning streak to 57 games. Central’s triumph came at the expense of Vestavia, which had previously enjoyed a remarkable 27-game unbeaten streak this season.
Meanwhile, in the 1A/5A category, No. 1 Moody claimed its first state title by overcoming No. 2 Montgomery Catholic, winning 27-18. This victory allowed Moody to avenge a loss in the previous year’s championship game, where they had fallen to Catholic 14-7. Moody concluded the season with a record of 22-3, while Montgomery Catholic wrapped up at 21-5.
The shifts in the rankings illustrate the competitive nature of Alabama’s high school flag football scene. Central-Phenix City climbed to the second spot in the latest MaxPreps national rankings and was ranked third in the USA Today Top 25, which has yet to release its final poll. Vestavia Hills finished with a final record of 28-2, landing at 27th in MaxPreps and sixth in the USA Today rankings.
In the large-school Top 10, there was notable movement, with playoff semifinalist Smiths Station rising to the No. 3 position despite being unranked in the final regular-season poll. Homewood, which faced defeat against Vestavia Hills in the quarterfinals, secured the 10th spot in the final rankings. Seven of the teams in the final Top 10 advanced to at least the playoff quarterfinals, underscoring the depth of talent in the league.
The small-school Top 10 experienced some reshuffling, particularly among the top two teams, but no newcomers were introduced to the list. Seven quarterfinalists from this classification also made the final Top 10, indicating a strong showing from multiple teams throughout the playoffs.
In addition to the championship results, the Vestavia Hills Parks Department is set to host a flag football clinic and high school showcase, providing further opportunities for young athletes to develop their skills and engage with the sport.
As the 2025 season concludes, the achievements of Central-Phenix City and Moody stand out, reflecting their hard work and dedication throughout the year. Their performances not only earned them state titles but also solidified their places among the elite in Alabama flag football.
