Bucks Struggle Without Antetokounmpo in Narrow Loss to Nuggets
The Milwaukee Bucks faced a challenging scenario during their recent game against the Denver Nuggets, ultimately losing 108-104 in a tightly contested match. The absence of their star player, Giannis Antetokounmpo, in critical moments proved detrimental to the Bucks’ performance, despite his impressive near triple-double of 31 points, 8 rebounds, and 11 assists over 33 minutes on the court.
Antetokounmpo’s presence on the floor saw the Bucks outscore the Nuggets by 16 points. However, when he was sidelined, Milwaukee suffered significantly, allowing Denver to outscore them by 20 points during the 15 minutes Antetokounmpo was off the court. After the game, Bucks coach Doc Rivers highlighted the team’s struggle to maintain leads without their star, stating, “We just gotta figure that out.”
Statistical analyses from Cleaning the Glass reveal a stark contrast in the Bucks’ performance with and without Antetokounmpo this season. With him on the floor, Milwaukee boasts an offensive rating of 125.2, placing them in the 96th percentile, while their defensive rating stands at 114.5, 62nd percentile. In contrast, without Antetokounmpo, their offensive rating drops to 108.1 (8th percentile), and their defensive rating deteriorates to 119.0 (25th percentile). This translates to a deficit of 10.8 points per 100 possessions in the minutes he is absent, highlighting a critical area for improvement.
The Bucks have struggled in recent games, finishing the first half of the season with a record of 17-22, placing them 11th in the Eastern Conference. Since Antetokounmpo’s return from injury on December 27, 2023, the team has recorded a 5-3 standing but has consistently faltered when he is unavailable. During a recent road trip, the team failed to maintain its lead against the Nuggets, who were missing key players including Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray.
Antetokounmpo expressed frustration after the game, emphasizing that the team must perform better, stating, “We didn’t come in here to do our job.” He pointed out that despite the absence of Denver’s top players, the Bucks failed to capitalize. The Bucks initially took a five-point lead with Antetokounmpo’s contributions, but the momentum shifted when he exited the game, allowing the Nuggets to build a substantial lead.
In the absence of Antetokounmpo, the Bucks rely heavily on players such as Bobby Portis and Kyle Kuzma to provide offensive support. However, during this game, their performance was subpar. Portis managed 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Kuzma and fellow teammates Kevin Porter Jr. and Ryan Rollins struggled collectively, contributing only 23 points on a combined 25.6 percent shooting from the floor.
Rivers acknowledged the team’s offensive challenges without Antetokounmpo, stating, “It’s been an issue for us all year. And we have to figure it out, bottom line.” The coach had previously expressed optimism that playing without their star player could present opportunities for growth, yet the Bucks have yet to demonstrate a consistent ability to perform effectively in his absence.
Antetokounmpo highlighted the need for a shift in mindset when he is not on the court. He stated, “When it’s good, it’s when everybody’s touching the ball. When it’s not good, it’s when we’re coming in and we’re just trying to get our individual shots.” He emphasized the importance of decisiveness and teamwork, urging his teammates to focus on collective play rather than individual efforts.
As the Bucks approach the midpoint of the season, the necessity for improvement is clear. Antetokounmpo noted, “When Giannis is not on the floor, we gotta be more aggressive, more physical, we gotta move the ball more.” This sentiment underscores the urgency for the team to develop a strategy that allows them to maintain competitiveness when their star player is sidelined.
Looking ahead, the Bucks face the challenge of either enhancing their performance during Antetokounmpo’s minutes off the floor or winning those minutes by a larger margin to offset the inevitable drop in performance. Whether through tactical adjustments by Rivers or potential acquisitions by general manager Jon Horst before the trade deadline, Milwaukee must find solutions to re-enter the playoff conversation as the season progresses.
