The Denver Broncos secured a hard-fought victory against the Washington Commanders on December 3, 2023, winning 27-26 in overtime. This match, held in Landover, Maryland, marked the Broncos’ ninth consecutive win, reinforcing their position among the top contenders in the AFC.

The game took a dramatic turn in overtime when Marcus Mariota connected with Terry McLaurin for a 3-yard touchdown pass with just under three minutes remaining. However, the Commanders’ attempt at a two-point conversion faltered when linebacker Nik Bonitto blocked the pass, sealing the Broncos’ win.

Denver initiated overtime with a strong drive, highlighted by Bo Nix’s 41-yard completion to Evan Engram, which set up RJ Harvey’s 5-yard touchdown run. The Commanders responded, moving into Denver territory after a defensive pass interference penalty granted them a new set of downs. Despite a promising offensive push, including a 30-yard touchdown pass from Mariota to McLaurin that was nullified by a holding penalty, Washington managed to reach the Broncos’ 2-yard line. Eventually, Mariota found McLaurin again on fourth down for the touchdown, but it was not enough to overcome the earlier failed conversion attempt.

Broncos and Patriots Share AFC Lead

With this victory, the Broncos are now tied with the New England Patriots for the top seed in the AFC at 10-2. The Patriots are scheduled to face the New York Giants on Monday night before heading into their bye week. In stark contrast, Washington’s defeat added to their woes, marking their seventh consecutive loss, bringing their season record to 3-9.

Nix had a productive outing, completing 29 of 45 passes for 321 yards, along with one touchdown and one interception. Engram was a key target, securing six catches for 79 yards. Harvey stood out with two rushing touchdowns. On the opposing side, Mariota finished the game with 28 completions on 50 attempts, totaling 294 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Tight end Zach Ertz also had a significant impact, making 10 receptions for 106 yards, while McLaurin, in his first game back since October 27, caught seven passes for 96 yards, including the crucial overtime touchdown.

Commanders Rally Late

The Commanders found themselves trailing 20-17 with three minutes left in regulation. Starting their drive on the 15-yard line, Mariota orchestrated a swift offensive series. After converting a critical fourth-and-1 at the 35-yard mark, penalties threatened to derail their momentum. Yet, Mariota’s connections with McLaurin and Ertz led them to the Denver 37-yard line. With just seconds remaining, Jake Moody, making his debut with the Commanders, successfully kicked a 32-yard field goal to tie the game 20-20 as time expired.

In the second half, Washington initially fell behind 13-7, but a remarkable 72-yard drive culminated in a 5-yard touchdown reception from Treylon Burks, giving them a brief 14-13 lead. Denver quickly responded; Nix’s deep throw to Courtland Sutton set the stage for Harvey’s rushing touchdown, reclaiming the lead for the Broncos at 20-14.

Despite their efforts, the Commanders could not overcome the Broncos’ defense in overtime. The game showcased moments of brilliance from both teams, but ultimately, it was Denver’s ability to execute when it mattered most that secured their victory. As the season progresses, both teams will look to build on this performance, with the Broncos aiming to maintain their momentum as playoff contenders and the Commanders seeking to end their losing streak.
