Blue Jays’ Hidden Heroes Propel Team to World Series Glory
The Toronto Blue Jays have made a remarkable run to the World Series, overcoming challenges and expectations to become a formidable force in baseball. Under the guidance of hitting coach David Popkins, the team has transformed into a powerhouse, finishing fourth in the majors in runs scored during the regular season and ranking as the best offensive group in the playoffs.
Popkins stepped into his role with the Blue Jays in October 2024 after a brief stint with the Minnesota Twins, where he had been dismissed following the 2024 season. His impact was immediate, as he emphasized the importance of tailoring approaches to each hitter’s strengths and weaknesses. The Blue Jays’ lineup is notable for its depth, featuring stars like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer, and Bo Bichette, along with several under-the-radar players who have stepped up significantly.
Emerging Stars Shine Bright
Among the key contributors are five players who have made invaluable contributions, helping to redefine the Blue Jays’ identity.
Addison Barger made a mark after being called up in April 2025, batting .243 with 21 home runs during the regular season. He has excelled in the postseason, boasting a .300 batting average and a .953 OPS. His pinch-hit grand slam in Game 1 of the World Series not only set a record as the first pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history but also symbolized his journey, having returned from Florida after the birth of his child to contribute to the team’s success.
Another critical player is Ernie Clement, who rebounded from a challenging start to his career to post a .277 batting average and a career-high 3.2 fWAR in 157 games this season. His performance in the postseason has been stellar, with a .429 batting average across 13 games, showcasing his ability to deliver when it matters most.
The Blue Jays also lean heavily on the offensive prowess of Alejandro Kirk. A two-time All-Star, Kirk has solidified his role within the team, hitting .282 with 15 home runs this season. His contributions have been pivotal, particularly during the ALDS against the New York Yankees, where he hit multiple home runs to set the tone for the series.
Veteran Leadership and New Talent
The team’s success is also attributed to players like Nathan Lukes and Daulton Varsho. Lukes, who finally made his major league debut at age 28, has proven to be a reliable player, posting a .730 OPS with 12 home runs in 135 games. His clutch performance in the postseason has included a critical two-run double in Game 1 of the ALDS.
Varsho, initially a catcher, has established himself as a key outfielder, combining defensive excellence with offensive contributions. He recorded 20 home runs this season and has been instrumental in generating momentum for the team, including a crucial home run that tied Game 1 of the World Series.
Popkins attributes the squad’s success to a collective mindset that promotes adaptability and resilience. He emphasizes that the team’s approach varies depending on the situation, allowing them to grind out wins through different styles of play. The Blue Jays’ ability to frustrate pitchers with disciplined batting and an aggressive approach has made them a challenging opponent.
As the Blue Jays continue their pursuit of a championship, the blend of established stars and emerging talents paints a promising picture for the future. With each player contributing uniquely, the team exemplifies the spirit of collaboration and determination, making their mark on the World Series stage.
