Bengals Face Third Straight Playoff Absence After Disappointing Season
The Cincinnati Bengals concluded their season with a disappointing 6-11 record, marking their third consecutive year missing the playoffs. Despite a promising start in 2022, when they reached the Super Bowl, the team’s performance has declined, leaving fans and management searching for answers.
Retaining key players such as Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins, the Bengals appeared poised to challenge for a playoff spot. However, a series of setbacks, including injuries and defensive struggles, severely hampered their progress. Over the past three seasons, their records have dipped from 9-8 in 2023 and 2024 to this year’s disappointing results.
Bengals president and owner Mike Brown announced that head coach Zac Taylor and director of player personnel Duke Tobin will return, emphasizing their commitment to building a championship-caliber team. “Our focus is on building a team that can consistently compete at the highest level,” Brown stated.
The season’s conclusion was marked by a heartbreaking loss against the Cleveland Browns, who won 20-18 with a walk-off field goal. This match encapsulated the Bengals’ struggles, as they often found themselves unable to capitalize on late-game opportunities. Taylor noted, “Several times, we’ve had games where we’ve played well in different areas and haven’t found a way to put it all together.”
The Bengals’ defense proved to be a significant liability throughout the season. While improvements were noted, the unit failed to reach playoff-caliber standards. Defensive end Trey Hendrickson was limited to just seven games due to injury, and first-round pick Shemar Stewart managed only one sack over eight appearances. The Bengals ranked in the bottom ten for sacks in the league this season.
Adding to their challenges, the Bengals were the only team in the NFL to start two rookie linebackers, who often faced difficulties against opposing offenses. Cornerback DJ Turner remarked on the mental strain of playing at this level, advising rookies to focus on their mental preparation for future success.
Injuries also plagued the Bengals, with Burrow missing nine games due to a toe injury. While veteran quarterback Joe Flacco stepped in after joining the team in October, the Bengals could only muster one win in Burrow’s absence. Reflecting on the season, Burrow expressed frustration, saying, “I certainly don’t want to miss as much time as I have, but that’s where I’m at.”
Despite standout performances from Chase, Higgins, and rookie Chase Brown, the offense struggled to compensate for a defense ranked 30th in points allowed and 31st in yards allowed. Defensive tackle BJ Hill acknowledged the team’s youth and resilience, emphasizing the importance of hard work and self-belief.
Burrow’s injury history continued to define his season, as he missed significant time in previous years due to a knee injury in 2020 and a wrist injury in 2023. When healthy, Burrow showcased his talent, leading the Bengals to dominant victories over the Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, and Arizona Cardinals. In eight games, he threw for 1,809 yards, with 17 touchdowns and five interceptions.
The Bengals’ defense, initially the worst in the NFL by DVOA through the first eleven weeks, showed signs of improvement after the bye week. By incorporating more man defenses and blitzing, they recorded the 12th-most interceptions in the league. Nonetheless, they ended the season allowing the second-most yards per rushing attempt and the third-most net yards per passing attempt.
Rookies played key roles this season, with each draft pick receiving significant opportunities. Although Stewart dealt with injuries that limited his impact, linebackers Demetrius Knight Jr. and Barrett Carter demonstrated potential, contributing a combined total of 212 tackles despite their struggles.
On special teams, second-year punter Ryan Rehkow excelled, ranking third in the NFL for average punt yardage and showing improvement in placing punts within the 20-yard line. Kicker Evan McPherson had a strong season, highlighted by a franchise-record 63-yard kick, although he faced challenges in the season finale.
As the offseason approaches, the Bengals will need to address key questions regarding contract extensions for several players, including Turner, Hill, and Brown. They are also expected to pursue free agents to bolster their defense, particularly focusing on the defensive line to enhance their competitive edge moving forward.
