Bangladesh Triumphs Over Ireland by Innings in First Test
Bangladesh secured a commanding victory over Ireland by an innings and 47 runs in the first cricket test match held in Sylhet on March 15, 2024. The standout performances came from opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, both of whom scored centuries, leading the team to a declaration at 587-8.
Joy achieved a career-best score of 171, while Shanto contributed a solid 100. This formidable total put Ireland in a challenging position, and they struggled in response, bowled out for 286 in their first innings. Ireland faced a daunting task to avoid an innings defeat, needing 301 runs to push Bangladesh to bat again. However, they faltered in their second innings, finishing at 254 during the second session of Day 4.
Ireland elected to bat first, but their innings got off to a rocky start with captain Andy Balbirnie dismissed for a duck. Despite this setback, Paul Stirling and Cade Carmichael managed to stabilize the innings, adding 96 runs together. Stirling’s knock of 60 was crucial, while Carmichael contributed 59 runs before both were dismissed.
In the bowling department for Bangladesh, offspinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz was particularly effective, claiming 3 wickets for 50 runs and dismantling the Irish middle order. Hasan Murad, making his debut, took 2 wickets for 47 runs, significantly impacting Ireland’s chances of crossing the 300-run mark.
The second test of the two-match series is set to commence next Wednesday in Dhaka, where both teams will look to build on this match’s performance. This victory not only highlights the strength of the Bangladesh team but also sets the stage for an exciting continuation of the series.
