Area High School Athletes Shine in January 3 Competitions

Area high school athletic teams delivered impressive performances on January 3, 2026, showcasing strong competition across various sports. Notable achievements came from gymnastics, basketball, and wrestling events, demonstrating the talent and dedication of local athletes.

Gymnastics Highlights

At the Jamestown Travel Meet, Dickinson High School secured its fourth all-around victory of the season, amassing 146.125 points. Senior gymnast Aspen Roadarmel continued her strong run, achieving her fourth all-around win with a score of 38.350 points. She excelled in three of the four disciplines, earning a remarkable 9.900 on the balance beam and scores of 9.700 on both floor and bars.

Seventh-grader Charlotte Haapapuro finished second in the all-around rankings, scoring 35.950 points and placing second on the uneven bars with a score of 9.425. Elizabeth Karsky also made her mark by taking first on the balance beam with a score of 9.300. Dickinson High will next compete at the Watertown-Mayer Meet on January 10, 2026.

Basketball Results

In boys’ basketball, the Killdeer Cowboys continued their winning streak, defeating the Beach Buccaneers 55-37 at home. This victory marked the Cowboys’ fifth consecutive win, bringing their season record to 6-1. Senior forward Jaxon Reese led the team with 20 points, while teammate Trey Larimer contributed 14 points and six rebounds. Killdeer dominated early, leading 29-14 at halftime. The Cowboys will face Shiloh Christian on January 8, 2026.

In the Class B division, the South Heart Eagles achieved a solid 79-59 victory over Lemmon, improving their record to 4-2. Junior guard Garett Bargmann was the standout player, scoring 28 points. South Heart will visit Alexander for their next game on January 8, 2026.

The girls’ basketball teams also had notable performances. The Killdeer Cowboys defeated Beach with a score of 48-31, with senior Taylee Andersen leading the way with 12 points including three three-pointers. Killdeer improved its record to 5-4 and will return to conference play against Trinity on January 6, 2026.

The Hettinger-Scranton Nighthawks secured their second win of the season by defeating Faith 42-31. Sophomore Acalia Olson led the scoring with 11 points and had a perfect record from the free-throw line. Hettinger-Scranton will host Hazen on January 5, 2026.

Wrestling Action

The wrestling teams also saw action, with Dickinson High School participating in the Rumble on the Red tournament, the largest high school-sanctioned wrestling event in the country. Dickinson finished in 25th place with 31 team points. The team will compete again on January 8, 2026.

In the Holstein Quad at New Salem-Almont High School, the Bowman County/Beach wrestling team achieved a dominant performance, winning both their matches against Beulah-Hazen and New Salem-Almont with scores of 46-20 and 48-20, respectively. They will participate in the Hettinger Classic on January 9-10, 2026.

College Basketball Update

In college basketball, Dickinson State University faced tough challenges against ranked teams. The women’s team played against No. 14 Montana Tech, losing 75-59 despite a strong effort from senior guard Kyrie Alldredge, who led the team with 12 points. The Blue Hawks are now 4-9 overall and 2-7 in Frontier Conference play, with their next games scheduled for January 9 against Bellevue.

The men’s team also fell to Montana Tech, losing 77-57. Sophomore guard Griffyn Doughty was the top scorer for Dickinson State with 14 points. The Blue Hawks’ record now stands at 5-10 overall and 3-6 in conference play, as they prepare for another back-to-back game series against Bellevue.
