ULA’s Vulcan Centaur Launches First Mission for U.S. Space Force

The United Launch Alliance’s new Vulcan Centaur rocket successfully launched on its inaugural mission for the U.S. Space Force and the Department of Defense (DOD) on August 12, 2023. The launch took place from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station’s Launch Complex 41 in Florida. This mission, designated USSF-106, is a significant step in the Space Systems Command’s National Security Space Launch Program.

The Vulcan Centaur rocket ascended into the atmosphere and delivered two national security satellites into geosynchronous orbit, located approximately 22,000 miles above the Earth. According to ULA, this mission was among their longest launches to date, taking over seven hours to successfully position its payloads.

The satellite payload includes various demonstrations and experiments for DOD customers, highlighting the importance of innovation in national security. Notably, the mission featured the Navigation Technology Satellite-3 (NTS-3), which is focused on testing advanced technologies designed to safeguard against threats that may interfere with GPS-type data. This capability is critical for maintaining national security.
