Starship Successfully Splashdowns in Indian Ocean After Flight 10

The latest test flight of SpaceX’s Starship concluded successfully with a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean on August 26, 2025. This flight, designated as Flight 10, marked a significant milestone for the ambitious project aimed at enabling human settlement on Mars. The 121-meter-tall rocket lifted off from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in South Texas, demonstrating key operational capabilities throughout its mission.

Starship’s Super Heavy booster and the Ship upper stage both met their primary objectives during the flight. The booster performed a controlled landing in the Gulf of Mexico, while the upper stage executed a precise splashdown in the Indian Ocean. Despite this success, the upper stage, known as Ship, showed signs of wear and damage due to the intense conditions it faced during reentry.

SpaceX released footage and images of the upper stage’s descent, showcasing its charred exterior and missing tiles. The vehicle’s belly displayed a toasted golden-brown hue, a testament to the high temperatures experienced during reentry. SpaceX acknowledged the expected damage, noting that it had designed the flight to stress the vehicle intentionally.

In a post on social media platform X, SpaceX stated, “Starship made it through reentry with intentionally missing tiles, completed maneuvers to intentionally stress its flaps, had visible damage to its aft skirt and flaps, and still executed a flip and landing burn that placed it approximately 3 meters from its targeted splashdown point.” The upper stage landed precisely near a buoy equipped with a camera, further confirming the mission’s success.

This flight marked the first successful splashdown for Ship in 2025, following previous test flights that ended prematurely. Flight 10 also achieved other significant milestones. For instance, Ship successfully re-ignited one of its Raptor engines in space, an accomplishment that had only been achieved once before. Additionally, it deployed a payload consisting of eight dummy versions of SpaceX’s Starlink satellites, a task that no previous Ship had managed to complete.

Looking ahead, SpaceX has ambitious plans for the Starship program. If subsequent flight tests continue to yield positive results, the company aims to launch its first trial missions to Mars as early as next year. Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of SpaceX, has consistently emphasized the potential of Starship as a vehicle for interplanetary travel, further fueling public interest and investment in the project.
