Robot Dog LASSIE Set to Accompany Astronauts on Mars Missions

When astronauts eventually journey to Mars, they may be joined by a quadruped robot designed to assist in various tasks. This robotic canine, named Spirit, has been developed to gather samples and help prevent astronauts from injuries on the Martian terrain. Equipped with autonomous capabilities, the robot will be able to operate independently, offering a unique support system on the Red Planet.

A collaborative team from Oregon State University, the University of Southern California, the University of Pennsylvania, and Texas A&M University recently tested a prototype of Spirit at White Sands National Park in New Mexico. Over five days, the robot navigated the park’s loose and unpredictable soil, which closely resembles the Martian surface. This trial follows earlier experiments conducted on Mount Hood in Oregon, where the terrain also mimicked lunar conditions.

Researchers are optimistic that insights gained from these field tests will enhance Spirit’s functionality, enabling it to serve as an independent companion for astronauts on future missions to the Moon and Mars. The project, aptly named the LASSIE (Legged Autonomous Surface Science in Analog Environments) Project, aims to create a robotic ally that can collect samples and alert human operators to potentially hazardous areas.

A video shared with Popular Science showcases Spirit’s agile movements across the sandy landscape. The small black-and-white robot features multiple cameras positioned on its “head.” As it moves, the robot’s joints produce a high-pitched sound, reminiscent of animated characters. The quadruped is also seen collaborating with a larger, four-wheeled rover, demonstrating its versatility in various operational scenarios.

Cristina Wilson, a robotics researcher at Oregon State University, emphasized the importance of legged robots for extraterrestrial exploration. “Our group is very committed to putting quadrupeds on the Moon and on Mars,” she stated. “It’s the next frontier and takes advantage of the unique capabilities of legged robots.”

Robotic dogs like Spirit can navigate terrain that traditional wheeled rovers struggle to traverse. With its four stick-like legs, the robot can adapt to varying surfaces and maintain balance. Researchers describe its use of “proprioceptive sensing” that enables the robot to detect subtle changes in terrain and respond to contact with the Martian surface. This capability allows it to act as a safety scout, warning astronauts of potential dangers.

Recent tests also focused on improving the algorithms that enable Spirit to function autonomously. By employing computer vision and machine learning, the quadruped can chart its own course and perform a technique known as “adaptive sampling.” This advancement could allow the robot to explore independently, significantly boosting scientific research opportunities on future missions.

Despite the challenges of simulating Martian conditions, White Sands National Park was chosen for its active gypsum dune fields, which provide diverse sedimentary textures. These elements closely resemble the loose sands of Mars, offering a complex environment for robot testing. However, temperature differences posed challenges; while Mars can be frigid, temperatures in New Mexico reached nearly 37 degrees Celsius during testing, necessitating early morning experiments to protect both the team and the robot’s power supply.

While NASA has no plans to send a real dog to Mars, the research process has been informed by the agility of a German shepherd named Howard, owned by Wilson. Observations of Howard navigating obstacles during earlier tests have provided valuable insights into improving Spirit’s performance.

The ultimate goal is to develop a robotic companion capable of assisting astronauts on Mars missions, living up to the legacy of the name Lassie.
