Nelson Labs Marks 40 Years of Commitment to Safety in Salt Lake City

Nelson Labs, a prominent player in microbiological and analytical chemistry testing, celebrated its 40th anniversary in Salt Lake City on October 1. The company, which has established itself as a global leader, reflected on its journey and commitment to ensuring the safety of medical devices that come into contact with patients.
Commitment to Safety and Innovation
During the anniversary event, Joe Shrawder, President of Nelson Labs, emphasized the company’s foundational promise: “If a device touches a patient, its safety should be proven beyond doubt.” This guiding principle continues to influence the company’s work as it aids innovators in bringing therapies to market, validating sterilization processes, and enhancing quality standards globally.
Nelson Labs hosted over a hundred guests for the celebration, including notable speakers such as Kelvyn Cullimore, President and CEO of BioUtah. Cullimore addressed the audience, highlighting Nelson’s significant growth over four decades and discussing the promising future for the medical device and pharmaceutical industries in Utah.
A Global Network with Local Roots
Founded in 1985, Nelson Labs has expanded its operations to serve more than 3,000 customers across 12 facilities located in the United States, Mexico, Asia, and Europe. The company has adapted its services to meet the evolving needs of the industry, enhancing its capabilities in areas such as extractables and leachables testing and packaging integrity.
“Across four decades, our teams have advanced methods and supported thousands of customers on every continent,” Shrawder stated. “Scaling from one Utah lab to a global network while ensuring science is uncompromised, that’s the accomplishment we’re most proud of.” He expressed optimism about continuing to build on this legacy in the coming years.
As part of its commitment to growth, Nelson Labs recently commenced a significant cleanroom expansion at its Salt Lake City campus. This project aims to increase ISO-classified cleanroom capacity, addressing the rising demand for independent sterility assurance testing.
With its focus on innovation and safety, Nelson Labs remains dedicated to its mission of protecting patients worldwide while reinforcing the standards that the industry and regulators depend upon.
