Mary Roach Launches New Book ‘Replaceable You’ on Sept. 16

Science writer Mary Roach is set to release her latest book, Replaceable You: Adventures in Human Anatomy, on September 16, 2023. After a two-and-a-half-year writing process, Roach will embark on a cross-country tour to promote her new work, which explores the complexities of human anatomy and the technologies that aim to replicate or replace parts of the human body.
Roach, who has previously authored bestselling titles such as “Stiff,” “Fuzz,” and “Bonk,” applies her signature blend of humor and scientific inquiry to Replaceable You. She delves into cutting-edge medical advancements, patient experiences, and the often unsettling history surrounding attempts to recreate human anatomy.
In her exploration, Roach interviewed a diverse group of individuals, including patients, physicians, pathologists, engineers, and scientists. This immersive approach allowed her to gain insights into groundbreaking technologies, practical applications, and the historical context of human anatomy. Among the intriguing claims she encountered are the notions that deceased individuals can exhibit goosebumps, and that it is possible to breathe through the anus.
As she navigated the subject matter, Roach also uncovered fascinating developments in medical fields such as skin grafting, artificial organs, and gender-affirming procedures. The stories presented in Replaceable You are not only steeped in science but also carry an element of humor, making complex topics accessible and engaging.
The Inspiration Behind the Book
In a recent interview from her home in Oakland, Roach shared that the genesis of this book stemmed from two compelling stories. One involved a reader, Judy Berna, who chose to undergo elective amputation of a functional foot due to ongoing complications. Roach was struck by the disparity between societal perceptions of limb replacement and the more accepted practice of joint replacements.
The second story that sparked her interest came from a woman running a research laboratory focused on stem cell development from adipose tissue. This led her to research innovative procedures, including one in which a surgeon crafted a replacement penis from a man’s middle finger. These narratives propelled Roach into a deeper investigation of the challenges and possibilities within the realm of body replacement.
Roach described her research process as a meticulous journey of collecting extensive notes and archival materials. Each chapter is designed to provide readers with a clear entry point into various aspects of human anatomy and its replacement. The writing evolved through multiple revisions, walks for reflection, and deep contemplation on the topics at hand.
Shifting Perspectives on Disability
One of the most impactful experiences for Roach occurred during her attendance at the Amputees Coalition National Conference. Conversations with amputees and researchers challenged her preconceived notions about disability and limb replacement. She noted that many individuals with prosthetics lead active lives, engaging in activities such as hiking and biking, which contrasts with her previous belief that retaining original limbs was always preferable.
Throughout her writing journey, Roach maintained a balance between humor and seriousness. She acknowledged the importance of sensitivity when addressing medical topics but also embraced the candid nature of scientific dialogue. Roach’s humorous wordplay adds a unique touch to her writing, allowing readers to engage with sometimes challenging subjects in a lighthearted manner.
Reflecting on the current landscape of medical research, Roach expressed her amazement at the advancements made in the field of replacement and reconstruction. While progress has been significant, she recognizes that much work remains to fully replicate the miraculous functions of the human body.
