Judge Dismisses Trump Lawsuit, Humanitarian Crisis Deepens in Gaza

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Trump administration against Chicago’s “sanctuary” laws, stating that the US government lacked standing to sue. Judge Lindsay Jenkins ruled that the local statutes do not obstruct federal immigration enforcement. Similar lawsuits have been lodged against other major cities, including Los Angeles and New York City.
In Gaza, an internal review by the US Agency for International Development found no evidence of widespread theft of humanitarian aid by Hamas. This analysis contradicts earlier claims made by the State Department that supported the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Fund, which has taken over aid distribution in the region. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry and the United Nations, over 1,000 people have died due to Israeli military actions while attempting to access aid. Many are suffering from severe malnutrition, and reports indicate that some have starved to death under the ongoing humanitarian blockade.
The US and the European Union have averted a potentially damaging trade war. During a meeting in Scotland, President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reached a preliminary agreement on trade relations. The new framework establishes a 15% tariff on most European goods imported into the US, an increase from the 10% tariff instituted earlier in Trump’s presidency. This tariff is significantly higher than the previous average of around 1.2%. The agreement is seen as a compromise, as it is lower than the 50% tariff Trump had previously threatened.
In a violent incident at a Walmart in Grand Traverse, Michigan, police are commending bystanders who intervened during a stabbing attack. On Saturday afternoon, 42-year-old Bradford James Gille allegedly attacked multiple individuals with a folding knife. Bystanders, including an unarmed former Marine, chased the suspect and subdued him until police arrived. All 11 victims, aged between 29 and 84, are expected to survive.
In California, a mother and her 8-month-old daughter have been missing for nearly two weeks, prompting a public appeal for information. Whisper Owen, 36, and her daughter Sandra McCarty were last seen leaving Fresno for their home near Sacramento on July 15. A traffic camera captured their vehicle, a silver 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer, shortly after 20:00 in Atwater. Owen’s family is increasingly concerned, with her mother expressing desperation in a statement to CNN: “It’s like she vanished into thin air.”
Animal shelters across the US are experiencing a significant rise in pet surrenders, largely attributed to financial difficulties faced by owners. Organizations such as Ruff Start Rescue in Minnesota report that many are forced to give up their pets due to increased living costs and other economic pressures. Megan Larson, the intake manager, noted the emotional toll on owners who must make such heartbreaking decisions.
As these separate yet interconnected issues unfold, they highlight the complex challenges faced by individuals and families across the globe. From the humanitarian crisis in Gaza to local acts of courage in Michigan and the personal struggles of families in California, these stories underscore the human impact of decisions made at both local and international levels.
