Israel Launches Ofek 19 Spy Satellite, Sparks Brief Panic

A surprise rocket launch in Israel triggered moments of concern among residents who mistook the event for a missile attack. At 22:30 local time (19:30 GMT) on September 2, 2023, Israel successfully launched the Ofek 19 spy satellite from Palmachim Airbase, situated approximately 15 kilometers south of Tel Aviv. The launch, which was not publicly announced in advance, caused “brief panic in Tel Aviv and central Israel,” as reported by local media. Fortunately, the satellite entered orbit successfully and began transmitting data shortly after launch, according to an update from the Israeli Ministry of Defense.
