Elon Musk Discusses Personal MRI Results Using AI Chatbot Grok
Elon Musk recently revealed that he underwent an MRI scan and subsequently uploaded the results to his AI chatbot, Grok. Speaking during an interview with podcaster Peter Diamandis, Musk noted that neither the AI nor his doctors identified any issues, highlighting a growing trend where individuals are turning to artificial intelligence for second opinions on their health.
During the conversation, which aired on October 3, 2023, Musk shared, “I did an MRI recently and submitted it to Grok. None of the doctors nor Grok found anything.” While the specific reason for the MRI was not disclosed, Musk’s comments reflect the broader dialogue about longevity and the role of AI in health diagnostics. He has been a vocal advocate for the use of AI to enhance medical evaluations, suggesting that technology could significantly improve diagnostic accuracy.
In recent years, a number of tech leaders in Silicon Valley, including Sam Altman and Peter Thiel, have invested heavily in research aimed at combating aging and extending human lifespan. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, claimed in 2024 that AI advancements could potentially double life expectancy by 2030. Musk’s remarks come amid this trend, as many billionaires are exploring ways to merge technology with health.
Musk has previously encouraged individuals to utilize Grok for their medical inquiries. He referenced a case where a Norwegian user shared on Reddit that the chatbot prompted him to seek further medical attention, ultimately saving his life by identifying a potential appendicitis that had been overlooked by doctors. Musk’s enthusiasm was evident when he remarked, “Try it!” while quoting a prior appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, where he asserted that AI could greatly assist in medical diagnoses.
While Musk is optimistic about the potential for technology to enhance health outcomes, he expressed caution regarding the concept of immortality. He described true immortality or prolonged life as “one of the worst curses you could possibly give anyone.” Nevertheless, he remains hopeful about solving the challenges of aging. “I’ve long thought that longevity or semi-mortality is an extremely solvable problem,” Musk stated, emphasizing the need for scientific breakthroughs in this area.
Diamandis, who co-founded the longevity company Fountain Life, discussed the importance of proactive health management during the interview. He highlighted the company’s offerings, which include AI-guided diagnostics that assess biomarkers. The primary aim of Fountain Life is to prevent avoidable health crises. Diamandis explained, “We do a 200 gigabyte upload of you, everything knowable about you, full genome, all imaging, everything,” underscoring the comprehensive approach to health monitoring.
Musk’s interest in health technology is underscored by a personal resolve to avoid the fate of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who regretted delaying treatment for his pancreatic cancer. This personal anecdote reinforces Musk’s commitment to leveraging technology for better health outcomes and the urgency he feels in exploring innovations that can improve longevity.
As the conversation around AI’s role in healthcare continues to evolve, Musk’s actions demonstrate a willingness to embrace new technologies for personal health management. His belief in the potential of AI to transform medical diagnostics and enhance life expectancy reflects a growing trend among leaders in the tech industry. As more individuals consider AI tools for health assessments, the implications for the future of healthcare could be profound.
